Book Description
Excerpt from Minutes of the Seventy-Ninth Annual Session of the State Convention of the Baptist Denomination in South Carolina: Held With the First Baptist Church, Gaffney, S. C., November 29-December 3, 1899 An alarming danger threatens not only the Baptists of South Carolina but all other Christians as well. Mormon missionaries are canvassing our State, going from house to house, two by two, scattering widely their cunningly devised literature, establishing preaching points, and slowly but surely planting an influence that will develop into the most threatening foe to the peace of society, the progress of vital godliness, and the prosperity of our Christian institutions. They already claim to have members in the State. To counteract the influence of these. False teachers, we have already scattered over the State pages of tracts and pamphlets. In addition to this we must send out more missionaries to those sections of the State where the people are most easily influenced by them. Where they preach error, let our missionaries preach the truth. This is the only successful way to meet them. Book Description
Excerpt from Minutes of the Eighty-Seventh Annual Session of the State Convention of the Baptist Denomination in South Carolina: Held in the Baptist Church, Orangeburg, S. C., December 6-9, 1907 We have been impressed with the importance of the trust committed to us, and have earnestly sought wisdom from Him who gives liberally and upbr'aids not, ' that we might so discharge our trust as to glorify Christ and advance the interests of our denomination in the State. More men have been employed, more work has been done. More fruit gathered, and more money raised this year than during any year of the board's existence. Nineteen years ago the Convention met in this city. Some of the strong men of that day have gone to their reward; others have moved from the State. A comparison of the report we bring today with the one made in 1888 is most encouraging. Then we had a working force of 83 men and one lady missionary; now we have 136 men and 15 lady missionaries; then our income was now it is nearly three times that amount. Surely we are making progress. At the January meeting of the board, the amounts recommended by the convention to' be raised for the different objects fostered by the convention were apportioned among the associations. The board recommended to the executive committees of our associations that they apportion the amounts allotted to each association among the churches of the same. This was done in most cases.
