He was a retired miner, mica worker and a mineral and gem collector. He was married to Agnes Gunter in October of 1923. They had four children. Charlie was ordained to the gospel ministry by the Beaver Creek Baptist Church on April 2, 1932. During his ministry he pastored Beaver Creek of the Mitchell Association, and Hall's Chapel and Fairview of the Yancey Association.
