Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications

Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications PDF Author: Vanda Rideout
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 9780773524521
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
InContinentalizing Canadian TelecommunicationsVanda Rideout examines active political resistance to the radical, neo-liberal transformation of Canadian telecommunications that has been orchestrated by the federal government, big business, and their powerful lobbyists over the last two decades. Rideout focuses on the protection of the public interest, a crucial element neglected by most recent studies, and shows that although alliances have been formed between labour, consumers, and public interest activists, significant disagreements over issues such as free trade, long distance and local competition, and a targeted subsidy program for very low-income Canadians have meant that this united front has not been able to counter the forces of the new neo-liberal telecommunication policy regime.Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunicationsdetails the complex relationships between the various corporate and government interests, shows how the changes they brought about have locked Canada's telecommunications system into the orbit of the US system, and discusses the implications this has for Canadians.

Intellectual Property Overlaps

Intellectual Property Overlaps PDF Author: Robert Tomkowicz
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136637869
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
Intellectual property rights and their overlaps are considered in light of rights purposes, relying on the concept of a balance of rights as the measuring rod for assessment of the consequences resulting from the exercise of overlapping rights. Identifying the complex interface between different types of intellectual property rights, this book discusses the use of these rights and their effect on a diverse group of stakeholders, from individual users of e-books to large corporations operating search engines on the internet. The book suggests solutions to potentially objectionable uses of overlapping rights in an attempt to provide judiciary and law practitioners with an analytical framework for resolving disputes of overlaps in the intellectual property system. In doing so, the author investigates how use of intellectual property rights associated with one segment of the system can affect the carefully crafted balance of rights held by various stakeholders in an overlapping segment. In particular, the book suggests that a properly construed doctrine of misuse of intellectual property rights would provide an adequate response to the challenge posed by improper use of overlapping intellectual property rights. This book is of particular interest to law practitioners, managers in advanced technology and media industries, academics, and university students who work with or analyze intellectual property and new technologies.

Recasting History

Recasting History PDF Author: Monica MacDonald
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773558098
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
Since 1952, CBC television has played a unique role as the primary mass media purveyor of Canadian history. Yet until now, there have been no comprehensive accounts of Canadian history on television. Monica MacDonald takes us behind the scenes of the major documentaries and docudramas broadcast on the CBC, including in Explorations (1956–64) and the series Images of Canada (1972–76), The National Dream (1974), The Valour and the Horror (1992), and Canada: A People's History (2000–02). Drawing on a wide range of sources, MacDonald explores how producers struggled to represent the Canadian past under a range of external and internal pressures. Despite dramatic shifts in the writing of history over this period, she determines that television themes and interpretations largely remained the same. The greater change was in the production and presentation, particularly in the role of professional historians, as journalists emerged not only as the new producers of Canadian history on CBC television, but also as the new content authorities. A critique of public history through the lens of political economy, Recasting History reveals the conflicts, compromises, and controversies that have shaped the CBC version of the Canadian past.

Self-Employed Workers Organize

Self-Employed Workers Organize PDF Author: Cynthia Cranford
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773572732
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Through case studies of newspaper carriers, rural route mail couriers, personal care workers, and freelance editors - four groups who have led pioneering efforts to organize - the authors provide a window into the ways political and economic conditions interact with class, ethnicity, and gender to shape the meaning and strategies of working men and women and show how these strategies have changed over time. They argue that the experiences of these workers demonstrate a pressing need to expand collective bargaining rights to include them.
