Milton's Minor Poems (Classic Reprint)

Milton's Minor Poems (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Milton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781332795772
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Excerpt from Milton's Minor Poems The poems, plays, essays, and stories in these small volumes are treated, first of all, as works of literature, which were written to be read and enjoyed, not to be parsed and scanned and pulled to pieces. A short life of the author is given, and a portrait, in order to help the student to know the real person who wrote the book. The introduction tells what it is about, and how it was written, and where the author got the idea, and what it means. The notes at the foot of the page are simply to give the sense of the hard words so that the student can read straight on without turning to a dictionary. The other notes, at the end of the book, explain difficulties and allusions and fine points. The editors are chosen because of their thorough training and special fitness to deal with the books committed to them, and because they agree with this idea of what a Gateway Series ought to be. They express, in each case, their own views of the books which they edit. Simplicity, thoroughness, shortness, and Clearness, - these, we hope, will be the marks of the series. Book Description
Excerpt from Milton's Minor Poems: L'allegro, IL Penseroso, Comus, And, Lycidas In the preparation of the introduction and notes I have freely consulted the work of previous editors, especially Masson, Verity, Browne, and Trent, and detailed acknowledgment of obligations to these and others will be found in the appropri ate places. To Professor Masson, as author of the Life of Milton, every modern student of Milton owes an immense debt, and I have to add to this general recognition that of the more personal Obligation which a student owes to an inspiring teacher. I also wish to thank, for suggestions in connection with the treatment of the masque, my friends Dr. A. H. Thorndike of Western Reserve University, and Dr. John Lester, recently of Harvard, and, for helpful. Criticisms throughout, Mr. L. T. Damon of the University of Chicago. Goethe's Poems

Goethe's Poems PDF Author: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333556051
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
Excerpt from Goethe's Poems: Selected and Edited With Introduction and Notes IN the preparation of this selection Of the poems of Goethe, arranged in chronological order, my desire has been to furnish a commentary which should give the necessary explanations of words and phrases and also the history of the origin of each poem, so far as this is known. Nothing more has been attempted. NO excursion has been made into the fields of aesthetics, and there is no discussion of any of the fascinating problems which arise in the study of the great master; but even within its narrow limits the book must assuredly be very imper fect. The text is that of the Weimar edition. There are no intentional changes in the wording. In the matter of spelling and of the use of capital letters the Prussian rules have however been followed, and the punctuation has here and there been altered slightly, commonly by the more frequent employment of the comma.
