Pages : 116
Book Description
The Defence Committee is responsible for monitoring the expenditure, policy and administration of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and associated bodies. This report reviews the activities of the Committee over the 1999-2000 session and assesses the reports that have been published by the Committee and the Government's responses to them. The report also covers a number of miscellaneous issues and some broader questions which have arisen during the course of the year. The Committee published fourteen reports and sixteen special reports during the session. A complete list of the reports is attached. An update of the recommendations from session 1997-98 on which further action has been taken is also appended as is the progress on recommendations made in the 1999-2000 session. The Committee aims to improve its scrutiny of the MoD's work and is constantly pressing for better quality information from the MoD rather than the quantitative descriptions of activity which are available currently. It considers that the resources and powers of the select committee are inadequate for the work they are required to do and supports the efforts of the Liaison Committee to push forward its agenda for change and modernisation.

Jones who led the investigation and wrote the report for the Senate Intelligence Committee, and a forward by the head of that committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein.
