The Age 21 Minimum Legal Drinking Age Law. Prevention Update

The Age 21 Minimum Legal Drinking Age Law. Prevention Update PDF Author: Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention (ED).

Book Description
Currently, all 50 states limit alcohol purchases to people aged 21 and over. But that hasn't always been the case. In fact, it was July 17, 1984, when President Ronald Reagan signed the national 21 minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) legislation into law. At that time, only 23 states had minimum alcohol purchasing ages of 21 years old. The legislation called for withholding federal highway funds from the remaining 27 states if they did not follow suit. By 1988, all states had set 21 as the MLDA. MLDA 21 laws have many components that target outlets that sell alcohol to minors; adults who provide alcoholic beverages to minors; and minors who purchase or attempt to purchase, possess, or consume alcohol. In addition, there are companion laws that provide for lower blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits for underage drivers and other legislation, such as laws that require registration of beer keg purchases and make hosts liable for the actions of underage drinking guests. Paying the Tab

Paying the Tab PDF Author: Philip J. Cook
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400837413
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
What drug provides Americans with the greatest pleasure and the greatest pain? The answer, hands down, is alcohol. The pain comes not only from drunk driving and lost lives but also addiction, family strife, crime, violence, poor health, and squandered human potential. Young and old, drinkers and abstainers alike, all are affected. Every American is paying for alcohol abuse. Paying the Tab, the first comprehensive analysis of this complex policy issue, calls for broadening our approach to curbing destructive drinking. Over the last few decades, efforts to reduce the societal costs--curbing youth drinking and cracking down on drunk driving--have been somewhat effective, but woefully incomplete. In fact, American policymakers have ignored the influence of the supply side of the equation. Beer and liquor are far cheaper and more readily available today than in the 1950s and 1960s. Philip Cook's well-researched and engaging account chronicles the history of our attempts to "legislate morality," the overlooked lessons from Prohibition, and the rise of Alcoholics Anonymous. He provides a thorough account of the scientific evidence that has accumulated over the last twenty-five years of economic and public-health research, which demonstrates that higher alcohol excise taxes and other supply restrictions are effective and underutilized policy tools that can cut abuse while preserving the pleasures of moderate consumption. Paying the Tab makes a powerful case for a policy course correction. Alcohol is too cheap, and it's costing all of us.

Drinking Age 21

Drinking Age 21 PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Adult children
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
This paper presents the results of a review of hundreds of hours of testimony before State legislatures, large amounts of editorial opinion and voluminous research reports in an effort to distill the most commonly heard arguments against the 21 year old drinking age. Many of these arguments are myths or misperceptions of fact. Some are outright fictions. Some are sincere concerns for rights and liberties that are no less valid simply because they compete with other, equally valid rights. All are views strongly held by many people, the vast majority of whom are honestly motivated by and interested in the freedom and well being of young Americans. Those who see the drinking age 21 as an essential step toward preserving that freedom and well being need to treat their opponents and their arguments with respect. Legitimate concerns and sincere questions deserve respectful, logical responses.
