Marek Thee was a Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist. This book tells his life from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became attached to the Polish consular service. On his return to Poland in 1950, he worked for the Foreign Ministry and later for the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina in the late 1950s. In 1968 he lost his job and his Polish citizenship in a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. He was able to move to Norway where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), editing an international quarterly journal, Bulletin of Peace Proposals and doing research on the arms race. In retirement, he continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute. The book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway. This is an open access book.

Many technologies begin life as someone's vision of an ambitious, perhaps audacious, technology that is expected to have a revolutionary impact on consumers-whether families, companies, or societies. However, if this highly touted technology fails "prematurely" at some point in its life history, it becomes a spectacular flop. Employing a behavioral perspective, this book presents a sample of twelve spectacular flops encompassing the past three centuries-ranging from the world's first automobile to the nuclear-powered bomber. Because technologies may fail from many different causes, spectacular flops pose a special challenge to the author's long-term project of furnishing generalizations about technological change. Instead of constructing generalizations that apply to all spectacular flops, this book provides limited generalizations that pertain to particular groups of technologies bounded by parameters such as "long-term development projects" and "one-off projects." The first half of the 1990s was a period of great optimism about humanitarian intervention. In the aftermath of the Cold War, it was hoped that the international community could begin to act cohesively in defence of fundamental international principles and that a global security policy aimed at the prevention of conflict and upholding human rights could be established. The actual experience of this period, however, has been sobering. Agreements engineered from above, like the Dayton Agreement or the Oslo Agreement, have mixed consequences. Efforts at humanitarian relief have often ended up frustrating good intentions and prolonging conflict. This book looks at what we learn from such experiences. Should we retreat from intervention? Is there a global reponsibility for wars and for massive violations of human rights? The authors start from a conviction that in a globalized world we do have certain responsibilities and that the point is to look at how we intervene. They aim to open up a "third approach" - an alternative to the dominance of realist or neo-liberal approaches - which would address the reality of contemporary conflict. Key themes include the need for a more democratic approach in terms of the accountability and openness of both governments and international institutions, the importance of international humanitarian law and the future of formal military forces.
