Aritmética versus Álgebra es un libro en el que se presentan ejercicios resueltos con argumentos aritméticos y también mediante ecuaciones algebraicas, con el fin de comparar ambos métodos. Unos ejercicios son más sencillos de resolver por un método y otros por otro, pero la realidad es que cuando aprendemos a utilizar los poderosos métodos algebraicos (el uso de las ecuaciones) se nos olvidan los humildes procedimientos aritméticos. Los métodos aritméticos no sustituyen al razonamiento, sino que lo estimulan. Por el contrario, en el método algebraico la resolución automática impide ver los razonamientos. Por tanto, los métodos aritméticos estimulan y ejercitan la inteligencia incomparablemente más. Cada enunciado es un reto para el lector que, con papel y lápiz, debe tratar de resolver cada ejercicio. Si no se ha conseguido encontrar el resultado, se puede consultar la solución aritmética y también el planteamiento y la solución algebraica de modo abreviado, porque el libro no va a enseñar a resolver ecuaciones, solo pretender comparar procedimientos. Key words: Study Conference‚ organisation‚ procedures‚ publications The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) has‚ since the 1980s‚ conducted a series of studies into topics of particular significance to the theory and practice of contemporary mathematics education. Each ICMI Study involves an international seminar‚ the “Study Conference”‚ and culminates in a published volume intended to promote and assist discussion and action at the international‚ national‚ regional‚ and institutional levels. The ICMI Study running from 2000 to 2004 was on The Future of the Teaching and Learning of Algebra‚ and its Study Conference was held at The University of Melbourne‚ Australia fromDecember to 2001. It was the first study held in the Southern Hemisphere. There are several reasons why the future of the teaching and learning of algebra was a timely focus at the beginning of the twenty first century.
