Looking Back

Looking Back PDF Author: James F. Queenan
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1463423462
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Judge Queenan tells a very human story of his life, family and travels, withholding no family secrets. Included is an account of his diverse and evolving career as a lawyer who handled business transactions, drafted estate plans, tried cases and, at the end, found greatest satisfaction in representing corporations reorganizing under chapter 11. He tells of the losing party in one case sending a bomb in the mail to his client. We also learn of the disastrous results of a Ponzi scheme that used ruses similar to those of Bernard Madoff. Judge Queenans high values and commitment to due process of law are apparent throughout. He is still troubled by the prejudicial effect of the press conferences held by the district attorney in the Brinks armed robbery case, which came before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts when he was a young law clerk with the court. In giving an account of his years on the bench, a time when he was also teaching in law school, Judge Queenan makes law and trials understandable to the layman. He rejects the notion that bankruptcy is a refuge for the dishonest and lazy, and he decries the countrys toxic fascination with debt, taking special aim at abusive leveraged buy-outs of corporations. He recalls memorable witnesses and lawyers, tells how he determined who was lying and explains what he did to reduce the length of trials. Perhaps most informative of all, he describes how a judge makes law rather than just grabbing a rule off the shelf. A former campaign worker for Robert Kennedy, Judge Queenan shows his passion for politics. He gives a critique of the Supreme Courts 2000 decision in Bush v. Gore, which handed the presidency to George W. Bush. As one who demonstrated against the war in Iraq before the war began, he examines the wars terrible consequences and traces its long political fallout that contributed to the election of Barack Obama, for whom the judge delivers a unique panegyric.

Midnight Pass PDF Author: Candace Rice

Category : Fiction

Pages : 170

Book Description
There is a sandbar between two Florida islands that sinks beneath the warm Gulf waters, only to reappear decades later during tropical storms and hurricanes. To locals, this mysterious passage is a shortcut between the Bay and Gulf when open, and a beautiful private beach when the sands rise again. For the Calusa Indians, it is a spiritual passage between the worlds. Their 10,000 year reign over South Florida comes to an end, and the tribe sinks into the closing waters. It will be centuries with Midnight Pass opening and closing after Hurakan's storms, before the Calusa's return to help Kali and her followers prepare to win a battle after the gods rage storms of apocalyptic proportion. Kali and her twin brother Tommy, were raised on Siesta Key. When they were twelve, Tommy took their fishing skiff for a short excursion out of the inlet and into the Bay. He never returned. Over the years, Kali discovers that she shares unusual beliefs with her Aunt. Noreen guides Kali's visions of a strange Indian tribe that will help them survive the destructive apocalyptic war. Strange events surround the two women, as the Shaman and Jatung, the Calusa chief, share their wisdom. A panther god becomes a guardian for the women, as their determination and strong beliefs help Kali and her friends re-build life on Siesta Key after the storms and tidal waves leave them isolated. The strange coven from Estero become experts at fishing, Cinda and the healers from Manatee plant gardens, and Arnell and her group of warriors, build canoes and weapons. Meanwhile, Brad and Lucayo are busy on the mainland, organizing their forces in Myakka. They are equally as determined to defeat the women in the final battle on the shores of Midnight Pass.
