Recognizing midlife as a period of major transition in the life span, this heuristic study investigated six women in midlife, who discovered and expressed their creativity by transitioning from a traditional career to a creative one. Balancing self-knowledge with intrinsic motivation, women between ages 45 and 62 overcame prior parental discouragement and personal challenges to maintain their authenticity and assume personal responsibility for development of a creative career. Self-confidence and inner appreciation for their talents equally played a part in their success. Creativity development in midlife required an exploration into untapped and unexpressed inner resources. Any internalized negative beliefs regarding creativity were overcome by self acceptance that one's creative passions were worthy of validation. This positive belief guaranteed success in a future creative career. In addition, examining the nature of these creative women and identifying their ability to deal with the unknown as a challenge rather than as a threat, gave them the courage to follow a poorly defined career path. the results of this study suggest the need for creative expression in midlife women and the identification of midlife as a crucial time for positive change and self-empowerment, findings also produced fourteen themes emerging from the transition of a traditional career to a creative one and a description of the collaborative nature of creativity in personal and societal systems. Two resultant hypotheses include the Self-Efficacy Creative Career Change Model and the Creativity Age Model.
