Book Description
The objectives of this report are (1) to assess the potential usefulness of microcomputer technology as a tool for project management at Corps of Engineers construction field offices, and (2) to present methods of effectively transferring that technology to field agencies. This report offers an overview of the construction management activities and the expected field office workload for military construction and civil works construction projects. In addition, the report describes the capabilities offered by microcomputer systems and the technology to be considered in acquiring these systems. The expected costs and benefits of the computer hardware and software are explained. Finally, approaches for extending this technology to the field are analyzed. This report concludes that microcomputer systems make more efficient (1) updating network progress and pay, (2) analyzing contract modifications, and (3) handling general data. Microcomputer technology can be effectively transferred to the field by: (1) development of the system documentation required by Army Regulation 18-1; (2) coordination with Corps district and field offices; (3) allocation of funds and resources for extension to the field; (4) classification of the system as a class IV system; (5) selection of an assigned responsible agency to maintain the system; and (6) cooperation among agencies involved in development and operation of the system. Book Description
This report documents the results of a prototype evaluation test (PET) of micro-computer applications in a Corps of Engineers construction field office and provides an economic analysis of the PET. The PET was conducted in FY82 at a Corps field office at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. It tested microcomputer applications to project management systems, data base management systems, word processing systems, and communications systems. Results of the PET showed that use of microcomputers is both successful and cost-effective. The system saves time, requires less manpower, is user-friendly, and significantly enhances office operations. An economic analysis of the PET showed that microcomputers are relatively inexpensive to use and provide significant tangible and intangible benefits.

Computer Applications in Construction

Computer Applications in Construction PDF Author: Boyd C. Paulson
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Companies
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 648

Book Description
Through the material, readers are given the ability to analyze systematically a potential area of need - such as a function in a department - to determine whether a computer application might help to assess the costs and benefits of alternative proposals and to proceed from that analysis to a clear specification for what the proposed solution should accomplish. There is also coverage of how computer professionals evaluate hardware and design the software and systems that will implement a given application. Furthermore, readers will learn how to manage the people, resources, time, and money required in the development process for creating a given application program or for adapting a package application to the needs specified in the design.

Microcomputer Applications in City Planning and Management

Microcomputer Applications in City Planning and Management PDF Author: Steven I. Gordon
Publisher: Praeger
ISBN:
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 358

Book Description
Effective use of microcomputers can greatly aid professional city planners and managers in the exacting duties they perform. Microcomputers are a low-cost, high-powered means of mechanizing both routine and sophisticated analytical operations. This text demonstrates how to incorporate microcomputer technology in a range of city planning problems and situations. The authors link a variety of methods and applications to concrete examples and exercises. Their hands-on approach is designed specifically for professional planners and managers in both the public and private sectors. It covers everything from inserting a floppy disk into the processing unit to producing typed copy of results from predictive modeling and forecasting future trends. The study begins with a basic introduction to the technical jargon associated with PCs and an explanation of the Input-Process-Output cycles. A series of chapters follow, explaining specific software packages and their functions and operations. Specific applications using spreadsheets, graphics, and database management schemes are extremely useful. Further chapters introduce graphics and database systems. The book's learn-by-example format will prove extremely useful to time-pressed practitioners and students in city planning and management, as well as students preparing to enter the field.
