The Legacy of the Rose

The Legacy of the Rose PDF Author: Kasey Michaels
Publisher: Kasey Michaels
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 435

Book Description
With The Legacy of the Rose, Kasey Michaels has crafted a dark and dangerous world within the Regency, fraught with insanity and perverse desires. “You must read this novel. It’s heady and gutsy and altogether wonderful.” —Catherine Coulter When Lucien Tremaine rides off to war, it’s with the promise he’ll return to the life he leaves behind … to his loving parents, to his beloved fiancée. It is that promise, that dream of reunion, which brings him back to Tremaine Court, only to be plunged into a living nightmare. Wounded, sick and disillusioned, he flees his family home with only one thought clear in his mind. Revenge. That single thought — and one image, that of the infuriating grey-eyed woman who has witnessed his disgrace, seen him vulnerable, at the very nadir of his existence. Kate Harvey has lived her own nightmare, and can see her own heartbreak and shame reflected in the eyes of Lucien Tremaine. But that doesn’t mean she’ll grant his demand to leave him alone, not when danger threatens at Tremaine Court. Can she goad him into returning, and are her motives purely concern for those who live there … or is her heart telling her something her mind refuses to accept?

The Fall of the House of Forbes

The Fall of the House of Forbes PDF Author: Stewart Pinkerton
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 0312658591
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
Forbes: the legendary name in finance journalism. Synonymous with wealth, grand excess, glamour, and fun as well as style, insight, gossip, and hard-nosed reporting, the media empire and the family behind it form a remarkable story that has never been told. Now, in The Fall of the House of Forbes, veteran journalist Stewart Pinkerton reveals the hidden machinations, disastrous decisions, and personal foibles of a century-old dynasty that rose to glittering heights and crashed just as spectacularly. Writing from an insider’s perspective and first-hand sources developed over his twenty years as a writer and editor at Forbes, Pinkerton takes us to the ritualized formal lunches inside the mansion-like headquarters at 60 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan; the lavish advertiser parties on board the family yacht, The Highlander; the sybaritic private life of Malcolm Forbes and the family’s increasing discomfort with its patriarch; and the glory days of the magazine, with its news-making stories, high-rolling expense accounts, and bar-setting standards for anyone who aspired to wealth and its trappings. But as the media business changed, Forbes was slow to react, and found itself burdened by Malcolm’s immense personal expenses, Steve Forbes’s bumbling, self-financed presidential campaigns, and the family’s hubris and hesitation in the face of reality. A series of devastating business decisions and an internecine struggle for power forced the sale of the Faberge eggs, the vintage toy collection, the homes, the private island, the yacht, and finally the sale of 40% of the company itself to outside investors…a collapse of shocking speed after decades of unsurpassed success. A compelling narrative account of a powerful family’s dysfunction, The Fall of the House of Forbes is a parable of capitalism at its best and worst, and a metaphor for the current state of digital turmoil in media.

Poetic Memories of Harlem U.S.A

Poetic Memories of Harlem U.S.A PDF Author: James B. Cohen Sr.
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1450299547
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
Born and raised in Harlem, New York. Athletically active as a youngster in Harlem. Quite familiar with Harlem explicitly from 110th St to 155th St. My poems reflect my growing up days in Harlem. They go to the heart of life in Harlem during its hey day. It was during these times during the 40s and 50s Harlem was known as the “Mecca” for black life in America, long before any other city could lay claim to this title. My poems relate to the entertainment palaces, such as the Apollo and The Savoy Ballroom, the adolescent days of fun, the hazards and remembrances of people such as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell and Shirley Chisolm. Appropriately the title of this collection is “Poetic Memories of Harlem USA” encompassing at least 70 memorable times, places and people. The title of some of the poems are “The Mecca”, “The Gypsies”, “Spanish Lady”, “Ole St. Nicholas”, “The Backyard”, “Coldwater Flats”, “Speakeasy”, “Numbers”, “Up on the Roof ”, “The Icebox”,” The Boogeyman” , etc. I have no doubt that the titles of many of my poems will resurrect the consciousness of those who have ever lived or visited Harlem and put my soul to rest that the time and energy to please those who have never been to Harlem will find them interesting, educational and informative.

Satire & The State

Satire & The State PDF Author: Matt Fotis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429807309
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
Satire & The State focuses on performance-based satire, most often seen in sketch comedy, from 1960 to the present, and explores how sketch comedy has shaped the way Americans view the president and themselves. Numerous sketch comedy portrayals of presidents that have seeped into the American consciousness – Chevy Chase’s Gerald Ford, Dana Carvey’s George H.W. Bush, and Will Ferrell’s George W. Bush all worked to shape the actual politician’s public persona. The book analyzes these sketches and many others, illustrating how comedy is at the heart of the health and function of American democracy. At its best, satire aimed at the presidency can work as a populist check on executive power, becoming one of the most important weapons for everyday Americans against tyranny and political corruption. At its worst, satire can reflect and promote racism, misogyny, and homophobia in America. Written for students of Theatre, Performance, Political Science, and Media Studies courses, as well as readers with an interest in political comedy, Satire & The State offers a deeper understanding of the relationship between comedy and the presidency, and the ways in which satire becomes a window into the culture, principles, and beliefs of a country.

St. Michael's Residential School

St. Michael's Residential School PDF Author: Nancy Dyson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781553806233
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
One of the few accounts by care-givers in an Indian Residential School describing thehorrific conditions.Nancy Dyson and Dan Rubenstein In 1970, the authors, Nancy Dyson and Dan Rubenstein, were hired as childcare workers at the Alert Bay Student Residence (formerly St. Michael's Indian Residential School) on northern Vancouver Island. Shocked when Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families, punished for speaking their native language, fed substandard food and severely disciplined for minor offences, Dan and Nancy questioned the way the school was run with its underlying missionary philosophy. When a delegation from the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs visited St. Michael's, the couple presented a long list of concerns, which were ignored. The next day they were dismissed by the administrator of the school. Some years later, in 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Reports were released. The raw grief and anger of residential school survivors were palpable and the authors' troubling memories of St. Michael's resurfaced. Dan called Reconciliation Canada, and Chief Dr. Robert Joseph encouraged the couple to share their story with today's Canadians. St. Michael's Residential School: Lament and Legacy is a moving narrative - one of the few told by caregivers who experienced on a daily basis the degradation of Indigenous children. Their account will help to ensure that what went on in the Residential Schools is neither forgotten nor denied.
