Archaeological and Historical Investigation Metropolitan Detention Center Site (36 PH 91), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Archaeological and Historical Investigation Metropolitan Detention Center Site (36 PH 91), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania PDF Author: Louis Berger and Associates

Book Description
"The site of the MDC is within William Penn's original town of Philadelphia, and part of a tract patented in 1690. Although the site was settled in the late seventeenth century, it remained on the periphery of the city until the early nineteenth century. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the site developed through a complex occupational pattern of mixed residential, commercial, and light industrial uses. Archaeological testing identified a correspondingly complex series of historic architectural features and refuse deposits that reflected the site's physical development from the mid-eighteenth through the mid-twentieth century. ... Perhaps the most remarkable finding was the preservation of a buried landscape surface which extended over much of the site and which contained artifacts and refuse deposits associated with various eighteenth-century domestic and industrial or craft-related activities."--Abstract. page i.
