Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. Provides direction from the State Government on land use and development for Metropolitan Adelaide over the medium term (a period of 10-15 years). It provides a comprehensive framework to guide future development, and will inform further detailed work with local councils, industry and local residents. In particular, the maps, policies and strategies contained in the Planning Strategy provide direction and a resource for metropolitan Councils undertaking strategic planning processes, including strategic management plans, Development Plan reviews and Development Plan Amendments. Incorporated within the Strategy is the Urban Boundary. Contained within the August 2006 volume of the Planning Strategy for Metropolitan Adelaide (at Appendix 4) is the Residential Metropolitan Development Program (RMDP) for Adelaide, providing more detailed information about population projections and the availability of land for residential development. For planning purposes, the Metropolitan Adelaide region is framed to the west by the sea, to the east and south by the Mount Lofty Ranges, and to the north by the Gawler River (and includes Gawler).
