Esta edición en rigor es la séptima del libro, un libro "vivo", que ha ido creciendo y evolucionando sin interrupción desde que vio la luz en 1988. En esta larga trayectoria ha superado con éxito el refrendo de una intensa y extensa utilización en la vida académica y en la actividad profesional, como libro de texto y de consulta, durante la cual se ha ido perfeccionando y consolidando, manteniendo en todo momento su carácter de obra de referencia en materia de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental (EIA). Cuando llega esta nueva edición, la EIA se puede considerar un campo de conocimientos maduro, lo que ha permitido a los autores depurar, simplificar y consolidar el contenido de la anterior. Así esta edición ha ajustado el marco conceptual a la realidad de su ya larga aplicación, ha ampliado la capacidad de uso de la metodología general y simplificado el diagrama de flujos que la representa, y ha hecho operativa la idea de integración ambiental. Pero la edición ha conservado el doble carácter académico y profesional de las anteriores, que equilibraba el enfoque conceptual asociado a la reflexión y al progreso del conocimiento propios de la academia, con el enfoque orientado a su aplicación directa en la actividad profesional a través de metodologías, de técnicas y de numerosos ejemplos.
