Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781634833332

Book Description
Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme involved in the folate pathway. Folate, a water soluble B vitamin, naturally present in fruits and vegetables, is a critical methyl donor for several molecular pathways necessary for cellular replication and maintenance. The authors of this book examine the importance of MTHFR in health and disease, including the folate requirements in healthy young women and its potential health implications and the role folate deficiency and MTHFR polymorphisms may play in the complex mechanism of global DNA hypomethylation. Other chapters explore and describe literature data on the involvement of MTHFR gene in HNC development and treatment outcomes and the role of MTHFR and other enzymes in the circulation of methyl in certain neurodegenerative diseases.

MTHFR Polymorphisms and Disease

MTHFR Polymorphisms and Disease PDF Author: Per Magne Ueland
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1498713882

Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a critical enzyme in both folate and homocysteine metabolism. It first achieved medical recognition in 1972 with the report of severe deficiency of MTHFR in a patient with homocystinuria, an inborn error of metabolism characterized by marked elevation of homocyst(e)ine in plasma and urine. Although the majority of cases of homocystinuria are due to a deficiency of the first enzyme in the transsulfuration pathway for homocysteine metabolism, cystathionine-ß-synthase (CBS), disruption of homocysteine remethylation to methionine can also result in homocystinuria. With the identification of additional patients with severe MTHFR deficiency, the heterogeneity of this disorder became manifest. This book covers many of the complex traits that have been reported to be influenced by the well-characterized 677C→T variant; there is less information on the 1298A→C variant, but it is discussed where appropriate. It is quite surprising, and unique, that a single variant should influence such a wide variety of clinical conditions.

MTHFR Diet

MTHFR Diet PDF Author: Jeffrey Winzant

Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en

Book Description
If you've been following the health and wellness scene at all in recent years, you've likely heard about MTHFR, even if you've never heard of the gene by that name. MTHFR is an abbreviation for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, an enzyme that plays a key role in converting folic acid into folinic acid and methionine, two chemicals used throughout the body. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, which is naturally found in foods. While you can't control whether or not you inherited this gene mutation, it's still important to know about it. A lack of enzymes can be associated with various diseases and disorders such as cancer, vascular disease, and many more. If your MTHFR gene is defective, it can cause a variety of health problems. A recent study published in the journal Nutrients found that people with MTHFR gene defects are more likely to have problems with obesity, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease. The study authors suggest that people with MTHFR gene defects might benefit from a diet that is lower in sugar and saturated fat and higher in fiber. Luckily, there are ways to work around these problems. One of the most popular methods is to follow a special MTHFR diet. This diet focuses on eating foods that are high in folate and other nutrients that support MTHFR function. It also recommends avoiding foods that can interfere with folate absorption, such as sugar and saturated fat. If you're interested in trying the MTHFR diet, this guide will show you how to get started. In this guide, you will discover... What the MTHFR diet is The benefits of following an MTHFR diet How to follow an MTHFR diet Sample recipes for the MTHFR diet

Interrelations between Essential Metal Ions and Human Diseases

Interrelations between Essential Metal Ions and Human Diseases PDF Author: Astrid Sigel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400775008
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 603

Book Description
MILS-13 provides an up-to-date review on the relationships between essential metals and human diseases, covering 13 metals and 3 metalloids: The bulk metals sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, plus the trace elements manganese, iron, cobalt, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and selenium, all of which are essential for life. Also covered are chromium, vanadium, nickel, silicon, and arsenic, which have been proposed as being essential for humans in the 2nd half of the last century. However, if at all, they are needed only in ultra-trace amounts, and because of their prevalence in the environment, it has been difficult to prove whether or not they are required. In any case, all these elements are toxic in higher concentrations and therefore, transport and cellular concentrations of at least the essential ones, are tightly controlled; hence, their homeostasis and role for life, including deficiency or overload, and their links to illnesses, including cancer and neurological disorders, are thoroughly discussed. Indeed, it is an old wisdom that metals are indispensable for life. Therefore, Volume 13 provides in an authoritative and timely manner in 16 stimulating chapters, written by 29 internationally recognized experts from 7 nations, and supported by more than 2750 references, and over 20 tables and 80 illustrations, many in color, a most up-to-date view on the vibrant research area of the Interrelations between Essential Metal Ions and Human Diseases.
