Methods of Laboratory and Field Measurements of Thermal Conductivity of Soils

Book Description
The objective of this study was to evaluate experimental methods of measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity of soils, building construction and insulation materials under laboratory and field conditions. The applicability, cost, accuracy, and limitations of these techniques are assessed. After a brief review of methods of measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity, the probe method is discussed in greater detail, because it appears to be the most promising technique. Factors such as moisture migration, instrumentation requirements, methods of probe emplacement, and experimental technique used in probe measurements are considered. (Author).

Thermal Properties of Soils
Author: Omar Farouki
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Frozen ground
Languages : en
Pages : 152
Book Description
This monograph describes the thermal properties of soils, unfrozen or frozen. The effects on these properties of water and its phase changes are detailed. An explanation is given of the interaction between moisture and heat transfer. Other influences on soil thermal properties are described, including such factors as soil composition, structure, additives, salts, organics, hysteresis and temprature. Techniques for testing soil thermal conductivity are outlined and the methods for calculating this property are described. The monograph gives the results of an evaluation of these methods whereby their predictions were compared with measured values, thus showing their applicability to various soil types and conditions.

Fundamentals of Soil Physics
Author: Daniel Hillel
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080918700
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432
Book Description
This book is not, in any case, in total defiance of the Wise Old Man's admonition, for it is not an entirely new book. Rather, it is an outgrowth of a previous treatise, written a decade ago, entitled "Soil and Water: Physical Principles and Processes." Though that book was well enough received at the time, the passage of the years has inevitably made it necessary to either revise and update the same book, or to supplant it with a fresh approach in the form of a new book which might incorporate still-pertient aspects of its predecessor without necessarily being limited to the older book's format or point of view.

Laboratory Manual for Geotechnical Characterization of Fine-Grained Soils
Author: Alan J. Lutenegger
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 100069626X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 274
Book Description
This manual presents procedures for performing advanced laboratory tests on fine-grained soils. It covers characterization tests, which determine soil composition and quantify the individual components of a soil, and behavioral tests, such as the Atterberg Limits tests that demonstrate how the fines fraction of a soil reacts when mixed with water and the Linear Shrinkage Test that demonstrates how much a soil shrinks. The material goes beyond traditional evaluation of basic soil behavior by presenting more advanced laboratory tests to characterize soil in more detail. These tests provide detailed compositional characteristics which identify subtle changes in conditions and vertical variations in the soil, and which help to explain unusual behavior. A unique compilation of information on key soil tests Combines characterization tests with behavior tests The book suits graduate students in geotechnical engineering, as well as practitioners and researchers.
