Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 0123977827
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 3685

Book Description
Safety in the process industries is critical for those who work with chemicals and hazardous substances or processes. The field of loss prevention is, and continues to be, of supreme importance to countless companies, municipalities and governments around the world, and Lees' is a detailed reference to defending against hazards. Recognized as the standard work for chemical and process engineering safety professionals, it provides the most complete collection of information on the theory, practice, design elements, equipment, regulations and laws covering the field of process safety. An entire library of alternative books (and cross-referencing systems) would be needed to replace or improve upon it, but everything of importance to safety professionals, engineers and managers can be found in this all-encompassing three volume reference instead. - The process safety encyclopedia, trusted worldwide for over 30 years - Now available in print and online, to aid searchability and portability - Over 3,600 print pages cover the full scope of process safety and loss prevention, compiling theory, practice, standards, legislation, case studies and lessons learned in one resource as opposed to multiple sources

Book Description
This standard applies to heating conditions, test procedures and criteria for the determination of fire-resistance of an element of building construction. In most cases, a single test, carried out in accordance with this Standard, establishes the fire-resistance for the element of construction concerned. In addition to providing information on which the fire-resistance of an element of construction can be assessed, the test report includes information which may be of use to the designer. (Records of temperature at critical times may be used by a designer to assess the fire-resistance of a variant of the tested prototype flexural member where the procedure for such an assessment is defined in the appropriate desin code). In certain cases, the test methods described herein provide information for the determination of: a) resistance to the incipient spread of fire through ceiling systems; b) safe distances for the spacing of combustible materials from elements that provide a separating function; c) radiant heat flux emitted from doorsets, shutter assemblies, damper assemblies and glazing; and d) the free cross-sectional area of air ducts to provide functional operation while providing fire-resistance.

Flammability Testing of Materials Used in Construction, Transport, and Mining

Flammability Testing of Materials Used in Construction, Transport, and Mining PDF Author: Vivek Apte
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 0081028180
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
Flammability Testing of Materials used in Construction, Transport, and Mining, Second Edition provides an authoritative guide to current best practice in ensuring fire-safe design. The book begins by discussing the fundamentals of flammability, measurement techniques, and the main types of fire tests for various applications. Building on this foundation, a group of chapters then reviews tests for key materials used in the building, transport, and mining sectors. There are chapters on wood products, external cladding, and sandwich panels as well as the flammability of walls and ceilings linings. Tests for upholstered furniture and mattresses, cables, and electrical appliances are also reviewed. A final group of chapters discusses fire tests for the transport sector, including those for railway passenger cars, aircraft, road and rail tunnels, ships, and submarines. There is also a chapter on tests for spontaneous ignition of solid materials. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Flammability Testing of Materials used in Construction, Transport, and Mining is an invaluable reference for fire safety, civil, chemical, mechanical, mining and transport engineers. In this revised edition, the latest information is provided on fire testing of products, systems, components, and materials used across these essential sectors, with all regulations and standards brought up to date. - Relays all new developments in fire safety standards, regulations and performance requirements - Covers a broad range of infrastructure sectors such as construction, transport, and mining - Updated to include cutting-edge fire tests and the latest iteration of standards including ISO, ASTM, and EN

Advanced Structural Safety Studies

Advanced Structural Safety Studies PDF Author: Jeom Kee Paik
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 981138245X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 664

Book Description
This book describes principles, industry practices and evolutionary methodologies for advanced safety studies, which are helpful in effectively managing volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments within the framework of quantitative risk assessment and management and associated with the safety and resilience of structures and infrastructures with tolerance against various types of extreme conditions and accidents such as fires, explosions, collisions and grounding. It presents advanced computational models for characterizing structural actions and their effects in extreme and accidental conditions, which are highly nonlinear and non-Gaussian in association with multiple physical processes, multiple scales, and multiple criteria. Probabilistic scenario selection practices and applications are presented. Engineering practices for structural crashworthiness analysis in extreme conditions and accidents are described. Multidisciplinary approaches involving advanced computational models and large-scale physical model testing are emphasized. The book will be useful to students at a post-graduate level as well as researchers and practicing engineers.
