Aging Research - Methodological Issues

Aging Research - Methodological Issues PDF Author: Carmen García-Peña
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783319183244
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
This book reviews classical epidemiological and clinical research studies, with a focus on aging. Chapters cover methodological topics like the scientific method, ethics, and the consequences of certain exclusion criteria, and the work includes a look at clinical concepts like multimorbidity, frailty and functionality. The authors reveal the issues and challenges for researchers of age and aging, and also consider the translation of scientific knowledge, from basic to clinical, and from clinical to public policies of social and health care. The focus on aging is what gives this book its valuable perspective on research methodology. All authors have considerable experience in aging, geriatrics or gerontology, and each chapter includes both a theoretical framework and practical examples of studies in aging. Readers will discover study designs that are reviewed for basic structure, main flaws and advantages, and are analyzed for specific conditions and variables regarding aging. This text is suited to both health care professionals caring for older adults, and researchers who are new to research in aging. It is relevant across the disciplines, including medicine, psychology, social sciences and dentistry, and it supports learning with graphs and figures.

Methodological Advances in Cross-National Surveys of Educational Achievement

Methodological Advances in Cross-National Surveys of Educational Achievement PDF Author: National Research Council

Book Description
In November 2000, the Board on International Comparative Studies in Education (BICSE) held a symposium to draw on the wealth of experience gathered over a four-decade period, to evaluate improvement in the quality of the methodologies used in international studies, and to identify the most pressing methodological issues that remain to be solved. Since 1960, the United States has participated in 15 large-scale cross-national education surveys. The most assessed subjects have been science and mathematics through reading comprehension, geography, nonverbal reasoning, literature, French, English as a foreign language, civic education, history, computers in education, primary education, and second-language acquisition. The papers prepared for this symposium and discussions of those papers make up the volume, representing the most up-to-date and comprehensive assessment of methodological strengths and weaknesses of international comparative studies of student achievement. These papers answer the following questions: (1) What is the methodological quality of the most recent international surveys of student achievement? How authoritative are the results? (2) Has the methodological quality of international achievement studies improved over the past 40 years? and (3) What are promising opportunities for future improvement?

Conceptual and Methodological Issues on the Adjustment to Aging

Conceptual and Methodological Issues on the Adjustment to Aging PDF Author: Sofia von Humboldt
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9401775761
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
This book approaches the concept of adjustment to aging and endeavors to build reader understanding of this construct through a critical review and discussion. Once the reader understands the origins and nature of adjustment to aging, a second innovation encompasses the development of a proposed empirical model of adjustment to aging and the analysis of its components and correlates. Measures to assess adjustment to aging, policies, programs and interventions comprising adjustment to aging and its components and correlates will also be addressed. Another innovation includes the multidimensional experience of adjustment to aging from the cultural perspective. Lastly, it addresses areas of future development related to this construct.Future policies and interventions in older populations need to integrate and debate the role of adjustment to aging, and ultimately consider a variety of different strategies, each with a different set of costs and benefits. Health and social professionals will be at the vanguard of policy making and community and institutional interventions. Hence, resources and tools to adequately prepare these individuals for the future years will be vital. It is the author's hope that this resource can be valuable for professionals and students working within the field of aging, as they develop research and intervention policies encompassing adjustment to aging in the coming years.
