Book Description
DANS UN INTERVALLE D'ENERGIE DONNE, LES SOLUTIONS DE L'EQUATION DE SCHRODINGER STATIONNAIRE SE STRUCTURENT EN FONCTION DE L'ORGANISATION DU POTENTIEL EN PUITS ET BARRIERES A CES ENERGIES. CES SOLUTIONS SONT BIEN APPROXIMEES PAR CELLES DE L'EQUATION DE SCHRODINGER RESTREINTE A CHACUN DE CES PUITS. L'ANALYSE SPECTRALE DE CE PROBLEME PEUT DONC ETRE ABORDEE PERTURBATIVEMENT: ON INTRODUIT DES OPERATEURS MODELES, CHACUN D'EUX COINCIDANT AVEC L'OPERATEUR ORIGINAL SUR UN DES PUITS SEULEMENT; PUIS ON COMPARE LE VRAI SPECTRE A LA REUNION DES SPECTRES DE CHACUN DES OPERATEURS A UN PUITS. LA QUALITE DE CETTE APPROXIMATION DEPEND DE LA TAILLE DES BARRIERES DE POTENTIEL DANS UNE METRIQUE DITE D'AGMON. L'INGREDIENT MAJEUR, DANS L'ESTIMATION DE CETTE PERTURBATION, EST L'ESTIMATION DES FONCTIONS DE GREEN ENTRE LES PUITS, DE CHACUN DES OPERATEURS DE SCHRODINGER, MESURANT LA PROBABILITE DE TRANSITION ENTRE CES PUITS, DU SYSTEME ETUDIE. CETTE CAPACITE A TRANSITER ENTRE PUITS DE POTENTIEL A TRAVERS LES BARRIERES DE POTENTIEL EST APPELEE EFFET TUNNEL. ON ABORDE LA GENERALISATION DE CE TYPE D'ANALYSE AU CAS OU LES REGIONS CLASSIQUEMENT PERMISES (PUITS) ET INTERDITES (BARRIERES) SE LISENT DANS L'ESPACE DES PHASES ET NON PLUS DANS L'ESPACE DES CONFIGURATIONS. CE DERNIER PHENOMENE EST APPELE EFFET TUNNEL DYNAMIQUE

Turbulence

Turbulence PDF Author: Uriel Frisch
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139935976
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
This textbook presents a modern account of turbulence, one of the greatest challenges in physics. The state-of-the-art is put into historical perspective five centuries after the first studies of Leonardo and half a century after the first attempt by A. N. Kolmogorov to predict the properties of flow at very high Reynolds numbers. Such 'fully developed turbulence' is ubiquitous in both cosmical and natural environments, in engineering applications and in everyday life. The intended readership for the book ranges from first-year graduate students in mathematics, physics, astrophysics, geosciences and engineering, to professional scientists and engineers. Elementary presentations of dynamical systems ideas, of probabilistic methods (including the theory of large deviations) and of fractal geometry make this a self-contained textbook.

The Physics of Metals: Volume 2, Defects

The Physics of Metals: Volume 2, Defects PDF Author: P. B. Hirsch
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521113106
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The Physics of Metals is an advanced treatise written by a team of experts. It presents an authoritative account of selected topics in a major field of modern physics and will prove indispensable to both experimental and theoretical solid state physicists and metallurgists seeking a clear explanation of the state of knowledge of the physical phenomena occurring in metals, without recourse to elaborate mathematics. The whole work was inspired by the desire to honour Sir Nevill Mott by writing an account of some of the topics treated in Mott and Jones's classic work The Theory of the Properties of Metals and Alloys.

Waves and Particles in Light and Matter

Waves and Particles in Light and Matter PDF Author: Augusto Garuccio
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461525500
Category : Science

Pages : 610

Book Description
From September 24 through 30, 1992 the Workshop on "Waves and Parti cles in Light and Matter" was held in the Italian city of Trani in celebration of the centenary of Louis de Broglie's birth. As is well known, the relationship between quantum theory and ob jective reality was one of the main threads running through the researches of this French physicist. It was therefore in a fitting tribute to him on his 90th birthday that ten years ago an international conference on the same subject was convened in Perugia. On that occasion, physicists from all over the world interested in the problematics of wave-particle duality engaged in thoughtful debates (the proceedings of which were subsequently published) on recent theoretical and experimental developments in our understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics. This time around, about 120 scientists, coming from 5 continents, in the warm and pleasant atmosphere of Trani's Colonna Conference Center focussed their discussions on recent results concerned with the EPR para dox, matter-interferometry, reality of de Broglie's waves, photon detection, macroscopic quantum coherence, alternative theories to usual quantum mechanics, special relativity, state reduction, and other related topics. The workshop was organized in plenary sessions, round tables, and poster sessions, and the present volume collects most-but not all-of the presented papers. A number of acknowledgements are due. We thank, first of all, the contributors, without whose constant dedication this volume could not have been published.

Pathways to Modern Chemical Physics

Pathways to Modern Chemical Physics PDF Author: Salvatore Califano
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364228180X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
In this historical volume Salvatore Califano traces the developments of ideas and theories in physical and theoretical chemistry throughout the 20th century. This seldom-told narrative provides details of topics from thermodynamics to atomic structure, radioactivity and quantum chemistry. Califano’s expertise as a physical chemist allows him to judge the historical developments from the point of view of modern chemistry. This detailed and unique historical narrative is fascinating for chemists working in the fields of physical chemistry and is also a useful resource for science historians who will enjoy access to material not previously dealt with in a coherent way.

The Reality of the Unobservable

The Reality of the Unobservable PDF Author: E. Agazzi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401593914
Category : Science

Pages : 368

Book Description
Observability and Scientific Realism It is commonly thought that the birth of modern natural science was made possible by an intellectual shift from a mainly abstract and specuJative conception of the world to a carefully elaborated image based on observations. There is some grain of truth in this claim, but this grain depends very much on what one takes observation to be. In the philosophy of science of our century, observation has been practically equated with sense perception. This is understandable if we think of the attitude of radical empiricism that inspired Ernst Mach and the philosophers of the Vienna Circle, who powerfully influenced our century's philosophy of science. However, this was not the atti tude of the f ounders of modern science: Galileo, f or example, expressed in a f amous passage of the Assayer the conviction that perceptual features of the world are merely subjective, and are produced in the 'anima!' by the motion and impacts of unobservable particles that are endowed uniquely with mathematically expressible properties, and which are therefore the real features of the world. Moreover, on other occasions, when defending the Copernican theory, he explicitly remarked that in admitting that the Sun is static and the Earth turns on its own axis, 'reason must do violence to the sense' , and that it is thanks to this violence that one can know the tme constitution of the universe.
