Parallel Computing

Parallel Computing PDF Author: Roman Trobec
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1848824092
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 531

Book Description
The use of parallel programming and architectures is essential for simulating and solving problems in modern computational practice. There has been rapid progress in microprocessor architecture, interconnection technology and software devel- ment, which are in?uencing directly the rapid growth of parallel and distributed computing. However, in order to make these bene?ts usable in practice, this dev- opment must be accompanied by progress in the design, analysis and application aspects of parallel algorithms. In particular, new approaches from parallel num- ics are important for solving complex computational problems on parallel and/or distributed systems. The contributions to this book are focused on topics most concerned in the trends of today’s parallel computing. These range from parallel algorithmics, progr- ming, tools, network computing to future parallel computing. Particular attention is paid to parallel numerics: linear algebra, differential equations, numerical integ- tion, number theory and their applications in computer simulations, which together form the kernel of the monograph. We expect that the book will be of interest to scientists working on parallel computing, doctoral students, teachers, engineers and mathematicians dealing with numerical applications and computer simulations of natural phenomena.

Multiple Criteria Optimization

Multiple Criteria Optimization PDF Author: Xavier Gandibleux
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306481073
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 515

Book Description
The generalized area of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) can be defined as the body of methods and procedures by which the concern for multiple conflicting criteria can be formally incorporated into the analytical process. MCDM consists mostly of two branches, multiple criteria optimization and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA). While MCDA is typically concerned with multiple criteria problems that have a small number of alternatives often in an environment of uncertainty (location of an airport, type of drug rehabilitation program), multiple criteria optimization is typically directed at problems formulated within a mathematical programming framework, but with a stack of objectives instead of just one (river basin management, engineering component design, product distribution). It is about the most modern treatment of multiple criteria optimization that this book is concerned. I look at this book as a nicely organized and well-rounded presentation of what I view as ”new wave” topics in multiple criteria optimization. Looking back to the origins of MCDM, most people agree that it was not until about the early 1970s that multiple criteria optimization c- gealed as a field. At this time, and for about the following fifteen years, the focus was on theories of multiple objective linear programming that subsume conventional (single criterion) linear programming, algorithms for characterizing the efficient set, theoretical vector-maximum dev- opments, and interactive procedures.

Applications of Number Theory to Numerical Analysis

Applications of Number Theory to Numerical Analysis PDF Author: S. K. Zaremba
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483265161
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
Applications of Number Theory to Numerical Analysis contains the proceedings of the Symposium on Applications of Number Theory to Numerical Analysis, held in Quebec, Canada, on September 9-14, 1971, under the sponsorship of the University of Montreal's Center for Research in Mathematics. The symposium provided a forum for discussing number theory and its applications to numerical analysis, tackling topics ranging from methods used in estimating discrepancy to the structure of linear congruential sequences. Comprised of 17 chapters, this book begins by considering some combinatorial problems studied experimentally on computing machines. The discussion then turns to experiments on optimal coefficients; a distribution problem in finite sets; and the statistical interdependence of pseudo-random numbers generated by the linear congruential method. Subsequent chapters deal with lattice structure and reduced bases of random vectors generated by linear recurrences; modulo optimization problems and integer linear programming; equivalent forms of zero-one programs; and number theoretic foundations of finite precision arithmetic. This monograph will be of interest to students and practitioners in the field of applied mathematics.

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications IX - Methods, Theoretical Aspects, Examples

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications IX - Methods, Theoretical Aspects, Examples PDF Author: Robert Klöfkorn
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030436519
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 727

Book Description
The proceedings of the 9th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Bergen, June 2020) are structured in two volumes. The first volume collects the focused invited papers, as well as the reviewed contributions from internationally leading researchers in the field of analysis of finite volume and related methods. Topics covered include convergence and stability analysis, as well as investigations of these methods from the point of view of compatibility with physical principles. Altogether, a rather comprehensive overview is given on the state of the art in the field. The properties of the methods considered in the conference give them distinguished advantages for a number of applications. These include fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory, carbon capture utilization and storage, geothermal energy and further topics. The second volume covers reviewed contributions reporting successful applications of finite volume and related methods in these fields. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability, making the finite volume methods compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, PhD and master’s level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations, as well as engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

Acoustics, Aeroacoustics and Vibrations

Acoustics, Aeroacoustics and Vibrations PDF Author: Fabien Anselmet
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119178398
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
This didactic book presents the main elements of acoustics, aeroacoustics and vibrations. Illustrated with numerous concrete examples linked to solid and fluid continua, Acoustics, Aeroacoustics and Vibrations proposes a selection of applications encountered in the three fields, whether in room acoustics, transport, energy production systems or environmental problems. Theoretical approaches enable us to analyze the different processes in play. Typical results, mostly from numerical simulations, are used to illustrate the main phenomena (fluid acoustics, radiation, diffraction, vibroacoustics, etc.).
