Pour répondre aux enjeux de la gestion des ressources en eau, les sciences hydrologiques se doivent de développer des outils qui permettent de prévoir l'effet des contraintes (climat, occupation du sol, politique d'assainissement) sur les variables hydrologiques (débits, qualité de l'eau). Comme la gestion de l'eau se conçoit nécessairement à l'échelle des bassins versants de dimension régionale, c'est à ces mêmes échelles que ces outils doivent être développés, tout en prenant en compte de manière explicite l'hétérogénéité spatiale et la variabilité temporelle des phénomènes impliqués. Cette question est appréhendée à travers une synthèse d'expériences de modélisation d'hydrosystèmes, qui permet de proposer des méthodes et des techniques d'intégration de l'information géographique pour aboutir à une utilisation cohérente en termes hydrologiques. Le propos est illustré d'exemples d'applications dans différents contextes géographiques et à des niveaux d'échelles variés : (i) modélisation du transfert des apports ponctuels et diffus dans un grand bassin anthropisé en milieu tempéré (bassin de la Seine, France) ; (ii) modélisation du transfert des pollutions agricoles dans un bassin rural en milieu tempéré (bassin de la Moine, France) ; (iii) modélisation de la relation pluie-débit sur un grand bassin soudano-sahélien (bassin du Bani, Mali). Ces expériences s'accompagnent de réflexions sur les spécificités de telles approches, les exigences de leur mise en œuvre et les changements de paradigmes qu'elles peuvent entraîner dans les recherches sur les hydrosystèmes

Climate and anthropogenic changes impact the conditions of erosion and sediment transport in rivers. Rainfall variability and, in many places, the increase of rainfall intensity have a direct impact on rainfall erosivity. Increasing changes in demography have led to the acceleration of land cover changes in natural areas, as well as in cultivated areas, and, sometimes, in degraded areas and desertified landscapes. These anthropogenized landscapes are more sensitive to erosion. On the other hand, the increase in the number of dams in watersheds traps a great portion of sediment fluxes, which do not reach the sea in the same amount, nor at the same quality, with consequences on coastal geomorphodynamics. This book is dedicated to studies on sediment fluxes from continental areas to coastal areas, as well as observation, modeling, and impact analysis at different scales from watershed slopes to the outputs of large river basins. This book is concentrated on a number of keywords: “erosion” and “sediment transport”, “model” and “practice”, and “change”. The keywords are briefly discussed with respect to the relevant literature. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps portray the height and extent to which flooding is expected to occur, and they form the basis for setting flood insurance premiums and regulating development in the floodplain. As such, they are an important tool for individuals, businesses, communities, and government agencies to understand and deal with flood hazard and flood risk. Improving map accuracy is therefore not an academic question-better maps help everyone. Making and maintaining an accurate flood map is neither simple nor inexpensive. Even after an investment of more than $1 billion to take flood maps into the digital world, only 21 percent of the population has maps that meet or exceed national flood hazard data quality thresholds. Even when floodplains are mapped with high accuracy, land development and natural changes to the landscape or hydrologic systems create the need for continuous map maintenance and updates. Mountainous regions, which cover nearly half of the continent’s area, are in many ways of vital importance for the European population. They supply much of the continent ́s water, are centres of biological and cultural biodiversity, provide various opportunities for recreation/ farmers. But mountainous regions are characterised by permanent natural handicaps due to topographic and climatic restrictions on economic and agricultural activity. Because of the geographical constraints to farming, work productivity is on average lower by 28% in mountain areas compared with less favoured areas, and by 40% compared with lowlands. Agriculture in mountainous regions can therefore, in general, not compete with agriculture in advantaged lowlands and, with very few exceptions, cannot hope to become competitive in adopting intensive models in response to the growing global competition.
