Water Treatment Unit Processes

Water Treatment Unit Processes PDF Author: David W. Hendricks
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420003437
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1266

Book Description
The unit process approach, common in the field of chemical engineering, was introduced about 1962 to the field of environmental engineering. An understanding of unit processes is the foundation for continued learning and for designing treatment systems. The time is ripe for a new textbook that delineates the role of unit process principles in environmental engineering. Suitable for a two-semester course, Water Treatment Unit Processes: Physical and Chemical provides the grounding in the underlying principles of each unit process that students need in order to link theory to practice. Bridging the gap between scientific principles and engineering practice, the book covers approaches that are common to all unit processes as well as principles that characterize each unit process. Integrating theory into algorithms for practice, Professor Hendricks emphasizes the fundamentals, using simple explanations and avoiding models that are too complex mathematically, allowing students to assimilate principles without getting sidelined by excess calculations. Applications of unit processes principles are illustrated by example problems in each chapter. Student problems are provided at the end of each chapter; the solutions manual can be downloaded from the CRC Press Web site. Excel spreadsheets are integrated into the text as tables designated by a "CD" prefix. Certain spreadsheets illustrate the idea of "scenarios" that emphasize the idea that design solutions depend upon assumptions and the interactions between design variables. The spreadsheets can be downloaded from the CRC web site. The book has been designed so that each unit process topic is self-contained, with sidebars and examples throughout the text. Each chapter has subheadings, so that students can scan the pages and identify important topics with little effort. Problems, references, and a glossary are found at the end of each chapter. Most chapters contain downloadable Excel spreadsheets integrated into the text and appendices with additional information. Appendices at the end of the book provide useful reference material on various topics that support the text. This design allows students at different levels to easily navigate through the book and professors to assign pertinent sections in the order they prefer. The book gives your students an understanding of the broader aspects of one of the core areas of the environmental engineering curriculum and knowledge important for the design of treatment systems.

The book is further divided into papers on the following topics: (1) Pretreatment Programs and Systems; (2) Dairy Wastes; (3) Oilfield and Gas Pipeline Wastes; (4) Dye Wastes; (5) Coal, Coke and Power Plant Wastes; (6) Landfill Leachate; (7) Laws, Regulations, and Training; (8) Physical/Biological Systems; (9) Pulp and Paper Mill Wastes; (10) Plating Wastes; (11) Food Wastes; (12) Metal Wastes; and (13) Toxic and Hazardous Wastes.

Speciation of Metals in Water, Sediment and Soil Systems

Speciation of Metals in Water, Sediment and Soil Systems PDF Author: Lars Landner
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540477330
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
The particular behavior of trace metals in the environment is determined by their specific physico-chemical form rather than by their total concentration. The introduction of atomic absorption spectrometry has lead to a plethora of scientific papers and reports in which metal concentrations in the environment are only reported as total concentrations. Only recently has the need for improved knowledge on the various forms and bioavailability of metals been realised. Considerable research effort is now devoted to measuring the concentrations of trace metals in surface waters. Efforts are made to couple chemical analytical techniques to process-related biological problems. The proceedings of the workshop on The Speciation of Metals in Water, Sediment and Soil Systems held in Sunne, Sweden, comprise these efforts and show aspects for further cooperation between analytical chemists and biologists.

Toxicity Reduction

Toxicity Reduction PDF Author: Davis Ford
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781566766340
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
In the reauthorization of the Clean Water Act in 1987, the U.S. EPA specifically addressed toxics management. In addition to the requirement to eliminate discharge of toxics, there can be a requirement to conduct a toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE). The scope of toxicity reduction varies from the very simple and inexpensive to the highly complex and costly. This book, volume three of the Water Quality Management Library, provides a complete overview of toxicity reduction evaluation. The book presents the testing and removal of toxicants, toxicity testing procedures, sampling techniques, baseline collection data, and source identification. Plus, the book presents toxicity reduction methodologies including unit processes necessary for organic toxicant control using biological and physical chemical methodologies as well as selected unit processes necessary for inorganic toxicant control.
