Metal Optics Near the Plasma Frequency

Metal Optics Near the Plasma Frequency PDF Author: Frank Forstmann
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540471758
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 136

Book Description
The second half of this book sets out several more sophisticated treatments of the response of a single metal surface to electromagnetic radiation. The relations between general forms of the response functions and additional boundary conditions are discussed for a variety of phenomenological models, the HD, the specular reflection model, the "dielectric approximation", the "semi-classical infinite barrier" model and several others. Also, microscopic surface response calculations based on a quantum mechanical model containing a surface potential for the electrons are presented and their relationships to the HD and the SCIB model are illustrated. Finally, we deal with two surface response functions d±(m) and dll(m), which contain the integrated effect of spatial dispersion and surface properties on measurable quantities such as reflection coefficient or surface plasmon dispersion. Their relation to measurements as well as to microscopic or phenomenological response calculations is discussed."--Pages v-vi

Fundamentals of Photonics

Fundamentals of Photonics PDF Author: Bahaa E. A. Saleh
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118770099
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1520

Book Description
Fundamentals of Photonics A complete, thoroughly updated, full-color third edition Fundamentals of Photonics, Third Edition is a self-contained and up-to-date introductory-level textbook that thoroughly surveys this rapidly expanding area of engineering and applied physics. Featuring a blend of theory and applications, coverage includes detailed accounts of the primary theories of light, including ray optics, wave optics, electromagnetic optics, and photon optics, as well as the interaction of light and matter. Presented at increasing levels of complexity, preliminary sections build toward more advanced topics, such as Fourier optics and holography, photonic-crystal optics, guided-wave and fiber optics, LEDs and lasers, acousto-optic and electro-optic devices, nonlinear optical devices, ultrafast optics, optical interconnects and switches, and optical fiber communications. The third edition features an entirely new chapter on the optics of metals and plasmonic devices. Each chapter contains highlighted equations, exercises, problems, summaries, and selected reading lists. Examples of real systems are included to emphasize the concepts governing applications of current interest. Each of the twenty-four chapters of the second edition has been thoroughly updated.

Formation Of Semiconductor Interfaces - Proceedings Of The 4th International Conference

Formation Of Semiconductor Interfaces - Proceedings Of The 4th International Conference PDF Author: J Pollman
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814552399
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 818

Book Description
Semiconductor interfaces are of paramount importance in micro, nano- and optoelectronics. Basic as well as applied research on such systems is therefore of extremely high current interest. To meet the continuous need for a better understanding of semiconductor interfaces with respect to both their fundamental physical and chemical properties as well as their applications in modern opto- and microelectronics, the series of international conferences on the formation of semiconductor interfaces was begun. The fourth conference of the series held in Jülich addresses as main topics: clean semiconductor surfaces; adsorbates at semiconductor surfaces; metal-semiconductor, insulator-semiconductor and semiconductor-semiconductor interfaces; devices and wet chemical processes. The 12 invited lectures assess the present status of the research in important areas and about 180 contributed papers describe most recent achievements in the field.

Nuclear Pion Photoproduction

Nuclear Pion Photoproduction PDF Author: Anton Nagl
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540460667
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
Photoproduction of pions from complex nuclei has become an investigative tool for (1) the detailed form of the elementary photopion amplitude, (2) the pion-nucleus optical potential, (3) nuclear structure, and (4) off-shell and medium effects on the elementary amplitude in nuclear processes. In this book, all these aspects are considered in detail. With improved experimental accuracy and beam tech- nology the study of nuclear pion photoproduction will break new ground and become an even more powerful investigative tool. This monograph is intended as an introductory guide as well as a reference manual for grad- uate students and researchers working in this important area of physics.

Optics for Materials Scientists

Optics for Materials Scientists PDF Author: Myeongkyu Lee
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0429757743
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
This new volume will help materials scientists and engineers fully comprehend the principles of optics and optical phenomena and effectively utilize them for the design and fabrication of optical materials and devices. Materials science is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of various fields, such as metallurgy, ceramics, solid-state physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Thus, many physicists, chemists, and engineers also work in materials science. Many materials scientists generally do not have a strong background in optics, and this book aims to fill that gap. The volume explains the fundamentals of optics legibly to nonspecialists and presents theoretical treatments for a variety of optical phenomena resulting from light-matter interactions. It covers thin film optics, interference lithography, and metal plasmonics as practical applications of optics for materials research. Each chapter of the book has a problem and reference section to facilitate the reader’s understanding. The book is aimed at assisting materials scientists and engineers who must be aware of optics and optical phenomena. This book will also be useful as a textbook for students in materials science, physics, chemistry, and engineering throughout their undergraduate and early graduate years.
