Greece's Horizons
Author: Pantelis Sklias
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642345344
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
The Greek economic crisis has imperilled the stability of the eurozone, generating much global anxiety. Policymakers, analysts, and the media have daily debated the course of the Greek economy, prescribing ways to move forward. This collection of essays progressively moves from an analysis of the causes of the crisis and the policy responses so far to a debate on some of the countryʼs advantages and capabilities that should underpin its new development model and propel the return to growth. The book analytically chooses to view the glass as half-full and seeks to provide motivation and inspiration for change by indicating some of the economic sectors where Greece maintains a comparative advantage. Therefore, it challenges the emerging picture of Greece as a country doomed to failure, where everything falls apart.

Global Investment Competitiveness Report 2019/2020
Author: World Bank Group
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 1464815437
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 343
Book Description
The Global Investment Competitiveness Report 2019-2020 provides novel analytical insights, empirical evidence, and actionable recommendations for governments seeking to enhance investor confidence in times of uncertainty. The report's findings and policy recommendations are organized around "3 ICs" - they provide guidance to governments on how to increase investments' contributions to their country's development, enhance investor confidence, and foster their economies' investment competitiveness. The report presents results of a new survey of more than 2,400 business executives representing FDI in 10 large developing countries: Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam. The results show that over half of surveyed foreign businesses have already been adversely affected by policy uncertainty, experiencing a decrease in employment, firm productivity, or investment. Foreign investors report that supporting political environments, stable macroeconomic conditions, and conducive regulatory regimes are their top three investment decision factors. Moreover, the report's new global database of regulatory risk shows that predictability and transparency increase investor confidence and FDI flows. The report also assesses the impact of FD! on poverty, inequality, employment, and firm performance using evidence from various countries. It shows that FDI in developing countries yields benefits to their firms and citizens-including more and better-paid jobs-but governments need to be vigilant about possible adverse consequences on income distribution. The report is organized in S chapters: Chapter 1 presents the results of the foreign investor survey. Chapter 2 explores the differential performance and development impact of greenfield FDI, local firms acquired by multinational corporations {i.e. brownfield FDI), and domestically-owned firms using evidence from six countries. Chapter 3 assesses the impact of FDI on poverty, inequality, employment and wages, using case study evidence from Ethiopia, Turkey and Vietnam. Chapter 4 presents a new framework to measure FDI regulatory risk that is linked to specific legal and regulatory measures. Chapter S focuses on factors for increasing the effectiveness of investment promotion agencies.

Acquisitions by Emerging Multinational Corporations
Author: Johannes Distler
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658191120
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 451
Book Description
This thesis analyzes the motivation and performance of 403 acquisitions made by emerging multinational corporations (EMNCs) in Western Europe and North America between 1994 and 2013. The findings indicate that most EMNCs were motivated to acquire in order to obtain access to the upstream and downstream know-how of their target firms. In addition, the thesis' event study results demonstrate that EMNCs on average generated value for their shareholders with their acquisitions over short periods around acquisition announcement. This result is particularly significant since similar studies on buying firms from developed markets have frequently come to the conclusion that acquirers destroy shareholder value.

Commercial and Arbitration Law of the Digital Economy
Author: Robert Walters
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040098703
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 157
Book Description
This book discusses the importance of the digital economy and its most pressing challenge: the onset of quantum and critical technology. It looks at how its implementation, either on its own or coupled with artificial intelligence, impacts commercial and arbitration law. International trade and investment are increasingly being integrated within national security policy and the law to protect the nation state. A failure to safeguard personal and commercial data will allow other state and non-state actors to set the rules that do not align with the values of the rule of law and transnational rules-based system. This book argues that it is necessary to establish a principles-based approach to governing the development and use of these technologies. Chapters touch on the application of smart contracts, arbitration, as well as mergers and acquisitions and their potential weaponisation in the digital economy due to their ability to transcend national security. Elements of intellectual property, particularly patents and trademarks, and how international legal instruments have directed national law-making are also explored. This is a useful reference for governments, regulators, legal, technologists and policy experts. This is also of interest to scholars looking at personal and commercial data in relation to intellectual property, contracts and international commercial arbitration law.
