Post-Communist Mafia State

Post-Communist Mafia State PDF Author: B lint Magyar
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 6155513546
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337

Book Description
Having won a two-third majority in Parliament at the 2010 elections, the Hungarian political party Fidesz removed many of the institutional obstacles of exerting power. Just like the party, the state itself was placed under the control of a single individual, who since then has applied the techniques used within his party to enforce submission and obedience onto society as a whole. In a new approach the author characterizes the system as the ?organized over-world?, the ?state employing mafia methods? and the ?adopted political family', applying these categories not as metaphors but elements of a coherent conceptual framework. The actions of the post-communist mafia state model are closely aligned with the interests of power and wealth concentrated in the hands of a small group of insiders. While the traditional mafia channeled wealth and economic players into its spheres of influence by means of direct coercion, the mafia state does the same by means of parliamentary legislation, legal prosecution, tax authority, police forces and secret service. The innovative conceptual framework of the book is important and timely not only for Hungary, but also for other post-communist countries subjected to autocratic rules. ÿ

Defeating Authoritarian Leaders in Postcommunist Countries

Defeating Authoritarian Leaders in Postcommunist Countries PDF Author: Valerie J. Bunce
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107006856
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
From 1998 to 2005, six elections took place in postcommunist Europe that had the surprising outcome of empowering the opposition and defeating authoritarian incumbents or their designated successors. Valerie J. Bunce and Sharon L. Wolchik compare these unexpected electoral breakthroughs. They draw three conclusions. First, the opposition was victorious because of the hard and creative work of a transnational network composed of local opposition and civil society groups, members of the international democracy assistance community and graduates of successful electoral challenges to authoritarian rule in other countries. Second, the remarkable run of these upset elections reflected the ability of this network to diffuse an ensemble of innovative electoral strategies across state boundaries. Finally, elections can serve as a powerful mechanism for democratic change. This is especially the case when civil society is strong, the transfer of political power is through constitutional means, and opposition leaders win with small mandates.

Merger Of The Century

Merger Of The Century PDF Author: Diane Francis
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 1443424412
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as are the United States and Canada. We share geography, values and the largest unprotected border in the world. Regardless of this close friendship, our two countries are on a slow-motion collision course—with each other and with the rest of the world. While we wrestle with internal political gridlock and fiscal challenges and clash over border problems, the economies of the larger world change and flourish. Emerging economies sailed through the meltdown of 2008. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that by 2018, China's economy will be bigger than that of the United States; when combined with India, Japan and the four Asian Tigers—South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong--China's economy will be bigger than that of the G8 (minus Japan). Rather than continuing on this road to mutual decline, our two nations should chart a new course. Bestselling author Diane Francis proposes a simple and obvious solution: What if the United States and Canada merged into one country? The most audacious initiative since the Louisiana Purchase would solve the biggest problems each country expects to face: the U.S.'s national security threats and declining living standards; and Canada's difficulty controlling and developing its huge land mass stemming from a lack of capital, workers, technology and military might. Merger of the Century builds both a strong political argument and a compelling business case, treating our two countries not only as sovereign entities but as merging companies. We stand on the cusp of a new world order. Together, by marshalling resources and combining efforts, Canada and America have a greater chance of succeeding. As separate nations, the future is in much greater doubt indeed.

Convergence of Competition Laws and Policies in the European Community

Convergence of Competition Laws and Policies in the European Community PDF Author: Michaela Drahos
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
Scholars have observed a gradual convergence of national European cartel laws towards EC competition law in recent years. Furthermore, most writers ascribe an important role in this convergence process to the influence of and pressure from the European Community. This is a remarkable conclusion considering the diversity that could be noticed only decades ago and the fact that the European Community has taken no direct legal action to harmonise national competition laws. These observations give rise to two questions: First, what is the extent of this convergence process and on which aspects do differences persist? Secondly, what have been the driving forces behind this development, and especially, what has been the role of the European Community in it? The study concentrates on three countries, namely Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, which represented different models only some decades ago. The book aims at providing more insight into the development of competition policy in the EC and into the adaptation of national regulatory policy to EC law in general. This book is of interest to lawyers, political scientists, and economists working in the field of competition policy, as well as to scholars interested in European integration in general.

Rude Awakening

Rude Awakening PDF Author: Karol Jakubowicz
Publisher: Hampton Press (NJ)
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
This book examines processes of media change in post-Communist countries. In this re-examination of the media under the Communist system and its role in the transition, the stress is on analysis of media policy and media systems. The author develops a model of change in Central and Eastern Europe and how it can be applied. As such, the intention is to illustrate the main elements and mechanisms of the process as exemplified by the situation in selected countries. Hoping to make the book as forward looking as possible, and to grasp the full range of factors weighing on media policies today and in the future, discussion is devoted to the way international integration has affected and will affect media policy in post-Communist countries.
