Book Description
Excerpt from Mere Literature and Other Essays A singular phrase this, "mere literature," - the irreverent invention of a scientific age. Literature we know, but "mere" literature? We are not to read it as if it meant sheer literature, literature in the essence, stripped of all accidental or ephemeral elements, and left with nothing but its immortal charm and power. "Mere literature" is a serious sneer, conceived in all honesty by the scientific mind, which despises things that do not fall within the categories of demonstrable knowledge. It means nothing hut literature, as who should say, "mere talk," "mere fabrication," "mere pastime." The scientist, with his head comfortably and excusably full of knowable things, takes nothing seriously and with his hat off, except human knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from Mere Literature And 'so very whimsical things sometimes happen, because of this scientific and positivist spirit of the age, when the study of the litera ture of any language is made part of the cur riculum of our colleges. The more delicate and subtle purposes of the study are put quite out of countenance, and literature is commanded to assume the phrases and the methods of science. It would be very painful if it should turn out that schools and universities were agencies of Philistinism; but there are some things which should prepare us for such a dis covery. Our present plans for teaching every body involve certain unpleasant things quiteinevitably. It is obv10us that you cannot have universal education without restricting your teaching to such things as can be universally understood. It is plain that you cannot impart university methods to thousands, or create investigators by the score, unless you con fine your university education to matters which dull men can investigate, your laboratory training to tasks which mere plodding dili gence and submissive patience can compass. Yet, if you do so limit and constrain what you teach, you thrust taste and insight and delicacy of perception out of the schools, exalt the obvi ous and the merely useful above the things which are only imaginatively or spiritually con ceived, make education an affair of tasting and handling and smelling, and so create Philistia, that country in which they speak of mere lit erature. I suppose that in Nirvana one would speak in like wise of mere life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Little Essays in Literature and Life The way of the familiar essay is one, of the formal essay another. The latter is informational, it defines, proves; the former, seeking for friendlier and more personal relations with the reader, aims at suggestion, stimulation. The familiar essay can be an impression istic reflection of the author's experience in the mighty issues of living, or it may be the frank expression of a mere whim. It should touch many a deep thing in a way to quicken the sense of the charm, wonder, and terror of the earth. The essayist can fly high, if he but have wings, and he can dive deeper than any plum met line of the intellect, should it happen that the Spirit move him. Book Description
Excerpt from Toleration and Other Essays IT seems useful, in presenting to English readers this selection of the works of Voltaire, to recall the position and personality of the writer and the circumstances in which the works were written. It is too lightly assumed, even by many who enjoy the freedom which he, more than any, won for Europe, and who may surpass him in scepticism, that Vol taire is a figure to be left in a discreetly remote niche of memory. Other times, other manners is one of the phrases he contributed to modern literature. Let us genially acknowledge that he played a great part in dispelling the last mists of the Middle Ages, and politely attribute to the papal perversity and the lingering vulgarity of his age the more effective features Of his work. Thus has Voltaire become a mere name to modern rational ists; a name of fading brilliance, a monumental name, but nothing more. Book Description
Excerpt from Vanishing Roads and Other Essays Though actually the work of man's hands - or, more properly speaking, the work of his travelling feet, - roads have long since come to seem so much a part of Nature that we have grown to think of them as a feature of the landscape no less natural than rocks and trees. Nature has adopted them among her own works, and the road that mounts the hill to meet the sky-line, or winds away into mystery through the woodland, seems to be veritably her own highway leading us to the stars, luring us to her secret places. Book Description
Excerpt from Literary Essays In offering these Essays to an American public, I am very sensible that the only value they are likely to have will arise not from any special literary ability or insight of mine, but solely from the constant delight which I have taken in the writers here reviewed, - who have indeed lived with me and in me, till their world has become a genuine part of my own by no means too rich intellectual life. It is in this way, I cannot help thinking, - by soaking themselves thoroughly with a few great writers, instead of spreading their interests so widely as most literary men do, - that educated men of only ordinary capacities such as mine may do most for the service of literature and the culture of their own minds. It is but few who in any age can really aspire to the position of great critics, critics such as Coleridge, or Hazlitt, or Lamb, or Lowell, or Emerson. Book Description
Excerpt from A Clerk of Oxenford: Essays on Literature and Life I hope, therefore, that it will be considered on its own merits as a book of essays, and not as a mere transcription of radio talks. Those who have read People, Places, and Books will observe that the range of this collection is considerably wider, and that it goes more deeply into analysis of literary method and substance. Letters from numerous correspondents have convinced me that there is a strong demand in the United States for this type of aesthetic discussion and criticism. I feel sure they are right: hence this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
