Book Description
Mercy Flights--America's first not-for-profit air ambulance service--was created in 1949 in direct response to the polio epidemic and medical transportation problems in Southern Oregon and Northern California. At that time, two small general hospitals provided basic medical care for the community of 17,000 residents. The nearest specialty hospitals for injuries and more complex care were in Eugene (167 miles), Portland (274 miles), and San Francisco (363 miles). Since the Interstate Highway System had not yet been built, these distances were very slowly traveled on two-lane roads. George Milligan, a young air traffic controller--and a pilot himself--mobilized the community to create Mercy Flights and recruited volunteer pilots and nurses to staff the service. The story of Mercy Flights is a grassroots account of heroism, service, creativity, tenacity, and strong community leadership.

Ethnicity and Regionalism in National Politics in Kenya and Nigeria: A Comparative Study
Author: Godfrey Mwakikagile
Publisher: New Africa Press
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 424
Book Description
This work is a comparative study of ethnic politics in Kenya in Nigeria, two countries on the African continent where ethnicity has played a major role in determining their destiny as much it has elsewhere only in varying degrees. This is similar to the author's other works on Rwanda and Burundi – including “Identity Politics and Ethnic Conflicts in Rwanda and Burundi: A Comparative Study” – where the same phenomenon has had tragic consequences for decades; both works appropriate in their own contexts yet of continental relevance. The work is also an examination of the Nigerian civil war whose tragic consequences included the secession of the Eastern Region which declared independence as the Republic of Biafra after tens of thousands of Easterners were massacred in Northern Nigeria in 1966.

North Atlantic Crossroads
Author: Darrell Hillier
Publisher: Atlantic Crossroads Press
ISBN: 1999000013
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
The true story of Gander's Royal Air Force Ferry Command unit and the men and women who kept the flights moving. Gander, Newfoundland, was a bustling hub of aviation during the Second World War as thousands of bombers passed through on their way to Britain. In North Atlantic Crossroads, the challenges and hazards of transatlantic ferrying come alive. Tales of search and rescue, aircraft salvage, medevac missions, and VIP visits highlight the activities of the Ferry Command Gander unit, notably the work of its aircraft maintenance department, headed by the incomparable John Joseph "Joe" Gilmore. Postwar, the burgeoning market for transatlantic commercial air travel gave new life to the Ferry Command sector of the field. The buildings once occupied by civilian and military personnel, and the hangars where they serviced the "Bombers for Britain," became the site of an air passenger terminal and hotel complex, setting Gander on its way to becoming the "Crossroads of the World." Includes a detailed bibliography, index, endnotes, and fifty photographs. Reviews "This book is full of revealing anecdotes and is a very well researched and absorbing read." —Air-Britain Aviation World "An impressively well researched and written narrative history." —Guy Warner, Irish aviation historian/author "Author and historian Darrell Hillier delivers a trenchant and illuminating account of the Ferry Command." —Joan Sullivan, The Telegram "A masterly piece of work which, no doubt, will find its place on the bookshelves of aviation enthusiasts." —Frank Tibbo, author of Charlie Baker George: The Story of Sabena OOCBG
