Book Description
Excerpt from Menands: The Garden Suburb of Albany and Troy The concert-room was crowded, for the gifted prima-donna was in the full tide of her great popularity. No matter who it was: it might have been Titiens, with a method as grand as the ocean of which she sang; or it might have been Jenny Lind, with a voice more like that of the Seraphim who stand before the Throne than anything we shall hear again on earth; it might have been Parepa, combining in her superb vocalism the excellencies for which all other singers have been praised; it might have been Patti, the perfection and the despair of operatic artists; or it might have been Nilsson, or Nevada, or our own Albani. You were there and you remember when she sang that grand aria from "Norma," how we shouted and waved our handkerchiefs; and when she gave the Jewel Song from "Faust," how we went wild with delight, and showered upon her bouquets and adulation. And you remember, too, when at last, in response to a thundering encore, she came to the footlights, and once more lifting up her wonderful voice, discarding entirely the language and methods of grand opera, and of foreign music, she sang: "Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home." There was no shouting then. The moment of tumult had gone by. The homage which expressed itself in noise had ceased. Even the flowers we laid at her feet could not say all we felt, and then and there, amid silence broken only by the old familiar strain, we rendered, one and all, the tribute of our tears. The triumph was complete; but it was not her's alone. The years go by; her name may have passed from memory, and we may question which of the great artists it was that so moved us, but "Though we may forget the singer, We do not forget the song." A Description of New Netherland
Author: Adriaen van der Donck
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 0803219393
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
This edition of A Description of New Netherland provides the first complete and accurate English-language translation of an essential first-hand account of the lives and world of Dutch colonists and northeastern Native communities in the seventeenth century. Adriaen van der Donck, a graduate of Leiden University in the 1640s, became the law enforcement officer for the Dutch patroonship of Rensselaerswijck, located along the upper Hudson River. His position enabled him to interact extensively with Dutch colonists and the local Algonquians and Iroquoians. An astute observer, detailed recorder, and accessible writer, Van der Donck was ideally situated to write about his experiences and the natural and cultural worlds around him. Van der Donck s Beschryvinge van Nieuw-Nederlant was first published in 1655 and then expanded in 1656. An inaccurate and abbreviated English translation appeared in 1841 and was reprinted in 1968. This new volume features an accurate, polished translation by Diederik Willem Goedhuys and includes all the material from the original 1655 and 1656 editions. The result is an indispensable first-hand account with enduring value to historians, ethnohistorians, and anthropologists.

Women Like Us
Author: Erica Abeel
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
"Women Like Us traces the lives of four women from their undergraduate days at Sarah Lawrence College in the late 1950s through the colorful and varied histories of their boyfriends, jobs, husbands, children, divorces, friendships, rivalries, failures, and successes to the present. It is a novel brimming with the lives of a group of women caught between two generations: too restless for the pieties of the fifties, too early for the revolution of the sixties." "In rejecting Ben for the beautiful but feckless Gerrit, Daisy establishes a pattern of "all for love" that, despite her talent and intelligence, will haunt her life. Gina, the class square, focuses on her career rather than love. Franca's marriage collapses under the weight of children and her husband's experimentation with open marriage. Delphine, the leader of the clique, astonishes all by marrying before her graduation." "Women Like Us captures the lives of a generation of women who at thirty were overtaken by the feminist revolution, when all the rules changed, and who have been running to catch up ever since. In the tradition of Marilyn French, Erica Jong, Judith Rossner, and Gail Godwin, Erica Abeel has written an unforgettable story; in it, every woman is sure to recognize something of her own life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
