Book Description
Excerpt from Our National Dangers, Real and Unreal: An Oration; Delivered Before Harvard Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa; In Sanders Theatre, Thursday, June 29, 1899 Less than half a year's space separates us today from the one hundredth anniversary of Washington's death. Of the great services of that great man to his and our country, I deem none greater than the wise counsel of his Farewell Address. There may be, it would seem that there are, some among us who think this out of date and believe themselves qualified to furnish a substitute. I do not pause to compare such men with its author, or to speculate whether any one of them will live in the memory of his country men a hundred days after his body shall be laid in the grave; I content myself with saying that I do not agree with them. In the Farewell Address we are reminded that ln proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened. Of no government is this more eminently characteristic than of that which Washington, perhaps more than any other man, aided to frame for the nation to which he, certainly more than any other man, gave being. I may, then, claim the warrant of his authority when I ask of this old and honored learned society, as the ful filment of a patriotic duty, its aid in enlightening public Opinion at a moment when our government must deal with new and grave problems, when our country is threatened by new and grave dangers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Centenary of Alpha of New York of Phi Beta Kappa: Celebrated at Union College June 11 and 12, 1917 In 1779 the Chapter determined to form subsidiary or ganizations, although their manner of forming them seems peculiar. They did not at first undertake to form chapters, or branches, as they called them, in other colleges, but in other towns in Virginia, and designated these chapters as Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on. Whether this was actually done or not does not appear, but it furnished a precedent that was extremely important, inasmuch as it was the actual salvation of the society. For at that time at William and Mary there was a young man named Elisha Parmelee, who had been at both Harvard and Yale, but who had come South for his health and had taken up his studies at William and Mary. Observing this move to form new chapters, he sug gested that branches be formed not simply in Virginia, but also in the neighboring states. Acting on his suggestion the society determined, and he was commissioned, to form chap ters at Yale and Harvard called respectively the Alpha of Connecticut and 'the Alpha of Massachusetts Bay. These were established respectively in 1780 and 1781. In all essential regards they were like the parent chapter, except that almost from the beginning the membership in them was confined to the senior class, with a few from the junior class. Book Description
Excerpt from The Soul of a College, And, the Installation of Phi Beta Kappa at Randolph-Macon Woman's College The thought that each of you can give something to the soul of your college is an inspiring one. The work of every one who now teaches or studies here affects directly the spirit of the place. You may not be able to make a great material contribution to the college, but you are inevitably making a spiritual contribution each one of you, from President Webb down to the youngest freshman. Whenever your President makes a fine, inspiring ad dress to you, or whenever a young student resists the temptation to shirk, and accomplishes in the face of difficulties an honest and thorough piece of work, why, then the spirit of the college is strengthened and helped upon its way. And whenever any one of you is slovenly or in any way dishonest in her work, or selfishly egotistical in her acts, why, then the spirit of the college is shackled and impeded in its growth. One student with harm ful influence may impede for several years the best development of the college. On the other hand, it is within the power of each of you to contribute something which will strengthen the spirit of helpfulness, loyalty, intellectual honesty, so vital to the soul of the college. The great thing in any institution is, as I have said, this body of traditions and ideals which I have called its soul. But we must not, of course, make this into a fetich, to be worshipped as an end in itself. The soul of a college is to be valued only in so far as it helps each student to be a better and happier woman and citizen, and to serve the state and the nation so that they may be the homes of happier and better men and women. Each of-you contributes something to the spirit of your college, but from it she draws far more than she gives.
