Book Description
Excerpt from Memorias Antiguas Historiales Del Peru When this volume was on the point of being printed off, Mr. T. A. Joyce, of the British Museum, discovered among the literary papers of the late Sir Clements Markham a translation of the same work, ready, with Introduction, for the press. With characteristic abnegation and modesty Sir Clements had put on one side his own labours whilst recommending the Council of the Hakluyt Society to issue the translation of a younger man. On this being communicated to Mr. Means he eagerly embraced the idea of having Sir Clements' Introduction placed before his own, and this has been done. On pp. Xlviii-li is given a list of words in the names of Kings and Incas in Montesinos, and on p. Lii a list of Quichua words, both compiled by Sir Clements Markham. The consequent delay in the issue of the volume has, it is hoped, been amply compensated for by the additions. ISBN: 9780393333015
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
The Incas: New Perspectives offers a revealing portrait of the ancient Andean empire from the earliest stages of its development to its final capitulation to Pizzarro in the mid-16th century. In recent years researchers have employed new tools to get to the heart of the mysterious Inca culture. Drawing on recent work in archaeology, anthropology, ethnohistory, and other sources, The Incas provides the most up-to-date interpretations of Inca culture, religion, politics, economics, and daily life available. Readers will discover how the Incas discovered medicines still in use and kept records using knotted cords; how Inca builders created masterful highways and stone bridges; and how the inhabitants of seemingly unfarmable lands came to give the world potatoes, beans, corn, squashes, tomatoes, avocados, peanuts, and peppers. --Publisher.
