Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of Acadia College and Horton Academy for the Half-Century 1828-1878 The publication of this Memorial Volume has been delayed by the cares and labors connected with the te building of the College. But the book contains matter that is of permanent value; and, perhaps, it may be re ceived with greater interest because it appears some time after the occasion on which several of the papers here preserved were first presented to the public. In some instances the same facts appear in different parts of the volume; but as each writer has presented them from his own point of View, it has been thought best to let the papers stand without modification. It is quite pro bable that the Record of Graduates may not be correct in all cases; but it has been prepared with much care and after extensive correspondence. It was not intended to include changes that have taken place since the close of the year 1878. The material of the Appendix, excepting the Legislative Acts, was found among the. Book Description
Excerpt from Friends of a Half Century: Fifty Memorials With Portraits of Members of the Society of Friends The Society of Friends possesses a rich inheritance in its wealth at material for interesting and instructive biography, which con tinnes to accumulate as generation follows generation. The aim of this Work is to utilize some of this material, and, by placing a sun picture side by side with a word picture, to give to its readers the opportunity of looking upon the features, and some times the figures of those whose lives and characters are briefly depicted in the accompanying sketches - a combination which may help many minds more completely to realize both fact and teaching. We have confined ourselves to the long roll of those who have departed from amongst us during the fifty years, 1840-1890, and have limited the number of these to fifty. In the selection we have by no means attempted to include all who might be re garded as most worthy of a place in it but rather have aimed at a series which might pretty widely illustrate the variety in the better life of the Society. Book Description
Excerpt from Through the Long Day, Vol. 1: Or, Memorials of a Literary Life During Half a Century AN autobiography is of necessity egotistical, but the egotism need not be aggressive or over weening. I have striven in the following pages to avoid falling into the error of making too much of myself, and have rather chosen to consider my own personality as a mere shelf in a book-case on which I might range the volumes of my experience, and the records of my intercourse with the once celebrated people who, in their day, ranked among the lights Of the age in which my lot and theirs was cast. I have, as far as possible, avoided speaking of the living. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of the History for Half a Century of the South Congregational Church, Boston: Collected for Its Jubilee Celebration, February 3, 1878 Resulted in the formation of this society. There were the people of the South End, particularly those who lived well up toward the Neck, who, in our later times, have been rather fond of calling themselves Old South Enders. But in fact, even within my memory, the term South End, in Boston, applied to every thing this side of West Street. My own grandmother, who lived where the Globe Theatre now stands, removing into that house late in life, considered that she moved to the South End. There has been a steady drift to the South End from the time when the Old South meeting-house at the corner of Milk Street was the southernmost church of all, and when John Hull, one of the founders of that church (who lived where Papan ti's dancing-hall is to-day), spoke of his house being at the South End of his time. A hundred years after that, Fisher Ames, having'walked down Beacon Street as far as the front of the State House, called it, in a letter, walking out of town. Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials, Vol. 1 In the evenings of the summer of 1885 my Father and I were much alone, my Mother having died in the April of that year, and he then told me more than I had before known of his own father and his early life; and when we went to Siena the following August, I asked him to write these recollections, that we might possess them. He took with him to Siena an accumulation of unsorted family letters, and in reading them and writing these Memorials he lived over again the life which made him. Beginning with his parents, he naturally passed on to his home, and in granting our request as to writing some record of his own life also, he could not write of himself apart from his brothers and sisters and friends, and, above all, from my Mother. For as he did not live for himself, so he did not live in himself; and as his heart was filled with the love of his people and his country, he could only write of himself as affected by these relationships.
