Book Description
Excerpt from Memorial of the Bates Family The family emigrated from England, as near as I have been able to ascertain, about the middle or in the latter half of the seventeenth century. They landed in Boston, and there separated. One branch went to New Jersey, and subsequently some of its members settled in Rochester, New York. I have heard, and think it probable, that a branch settled in Virginia. Those from whom we are descended remained in New England, and were among the first inhabitants of Durham, Connecticut. In tracing our descent from the early settlers of Durham, much information has been derived from the published records of that town. Book Description
Excerpt from Bates: A Brief History and Genealogy of Joseph Harrison Bates In compliance with your request that I write you some of the facts concerning the life of my father, I am now sending you the following: First, let me say that I very soon found that in order to do the sub J ect justice I would have to go back further and branch out more than I at first thought to do. I have done this the more willingly because I fear that it is not being done by any one else and that if necessary facts and dates are not secured now the time will very soon come when it will be too late. I feel now very keenly that the golden opportunity for me to have secured at first hand and preserved the facts about my family and their ancestry has already passed unimproved. Bates, Bears and Bunker Hill

Bates, Bears and Bunker Hill PDF Author: Edward Deacon
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Pages : 96

Book Description
Excerpt from Bates, Bears and Bunker Hill: With a Correction or Two In this hearty, heady and robust character of the early English country village 450 years ago, or about the year 1450, we begin to see the first traces of a race of English men who have preserved their name and characteristics to the present day. Andrew was one of a family, who for more than a hundred years before him, had grown to be money makers, and prosperous townsmen in a small community, whose activities and inhabitants they aimed to control by possessing themselves of various town offices and using them for their own advancement. But Andrew was merely a type of a class which exists in all periods, and the rough over-riding of his neighbors, still keeping within the strict letter of the law, can be easily matched today in any community on either side of the ocean.
