Imperial Educación

Imperial Educación PDF Author: Thomas Genova
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 0813946255
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 471

Book Description
In the long nineteenth century, Argentine and Cuban reformers invited white women from the United States to train teachers as replacements for their countries’ supposedly unfit mothers. Imperial Educación examines representations of mixed-race Afro-descended mothers in literary and educational texts from the Americas during an era in which governing elites were invested in reproducing European cultural values in their countries’ citizens. Thomas Genova analyzes the racialized figure of the republican mother in nineteenth-century literary texts in North and South America and the Caribbean, highlighting the ways in which these works question the capacity of Afro-descended women to raise good republican citizens for the newly formed New World nation-states. Considering the work of canonical and noncanonical authors alike, Genova asks how the allegory of the national family—omnipresent in the nationalist discourses of the Americas—reconciles itself to the race hierarchies upon which New World slave and postslavery societies are built. This innovative study is the first book to consider the hemispheric relations between race, republican motherhood, and public education by triangulating the nation-building processes of Cuba and Argentina through U.S. empire. National Literacies in Education

National Literacies in Education PDF Author: Stephanie Fox
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031417623
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
This edited volume provides an international overview of research on nationalism in education. In light of emerging neo-nationalism and national answers to global challenges, the book contributes to a growing and desperately needed discussion on how we can understand and deal with the involvement of education in phenomena of nations and nationalisms in school, curriculum, theory and research. In this book, internationally renowned scholars as well as doctoral students and postdocs from Asia, Europe, America, and Australia show how the history of education can theoretically and empirically deal with the concept(ion)s of nation and nationalism.

Black Legend

Black Legend PDF Author: Paulina L. Alberto
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108988512
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
Celebrities live their lives in constant dialogue with stories about them. But when these stories are shaped by durable racist myths, they wield undue power to ruin lives and obliterate communities. Black Legend is the haunting story of an Afro-Argentine, Raúl Grigera ('el negro Raúl'), who in the early 1900s audaciously fashioned himself into an alluring Black icon of Buenos Aires' bohemian nightlife, only to have defamatory storytellers unmake him. In this gripping history, Paulina Alberto exposes the destructive power of racial storytelling and narrates a new history of Black Argentina and Argentine Blackness across two centuries. With the extraordinary Raúl Grigera at its center, Black Legend opens new windows into lived experiences of Blackness in a 'white' nation, and illuminates how Raúl's experience of celebrity was not far removed from more ordinary experiences of racial stories in the flesh.
