Author: Mrs. Russell Barrington

ISBN: 9781333360177
Category : Literary Collections

Pages : 558
Book Description
Excerpt from The Life, Letters and Work of Frederic Leighton, Vol. 1 of 2 Ten years and more have passed since Leighton died, yet it is still difficult to get sufficiently far away, to take in the whole of his life and being in their just proportion to the world in which he lived. When we are in Rome, hemmed in by narrow streets, St. Peter's is invisible; once across that wonderful Cam pagna and mounting the slopes Of Frascati, there, like a huge pearl gleaming in the light, rises the dome of the Mother Church. As distance gives the true relation between a lofty building and its suburbs, so time alone can decide the height of the pedestal on which to place the great. Life and Letters of John Howard Raymond (Classic Reprint)
Author: John Howard Raymond
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781440033155
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 764
Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Howard Raymond It seems almost a violation of my father's nature, which was most unassuming, to offer the public the record of the life on which he himself see so modest an estimate; and I may, perhaps, confess to those who read this volume with what hesitation it is published. It has grown from a mere compilation of his private letters, intended for the eyes of family friends, into an extended memoir, as the circle of those manifestly interested in its progress has gradually widened. It was a natural and sacred impulse to gather together for preservation the letters which held so much of himself, that a treasure in which we had delighted might not be lost to our children. But it was only when persuaded that the number of those waiting to welcome it was large, among his former pupils, associates, and personal friends, that I consented to undertake a work in which I was totally inexperienced - the selection from a mass of correspondence and other material such portions as might most characteristically show his life and influence. The first decisive impulse which I received was from the words of one who had been in special sympathy with the plan, and who wrote, "I did revere and love and enjoy the man, and I think that some of the rich overflow of his life ought to be gathered up, as the moisture is drawn into the clouds, and sent forth to refresh the thirsty earth once more." It was an inspiring thought that the story of his life might still hold a blessing for those whom the life itself had blessed; or even more, that others, to whom it had been unknown, might glean from it some word of comfort or instruction. It is only with this hope that I send it from my hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Life, Letters, and Friendships of Richard Monckton Milnes, Vol. 1 of 2
Author: T. Wemyss Reid
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266340089
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 546
Book Description
Excerpt from The Life, Letters, and Friendships of Richard Monckton Milnes, Vol. 1 of 2: First Lord Houghton Had all influenced his mind in his youth; he had laid the first plank of a kind of pulpit from which Emerson could preach throughout all Saxondom, and he had recognised the noble character and brilliant qualities of Miss Nightingale long before the world had heard her name. These were but a few of the friendships of Monckton Milnes; and the reader of these pages will learn that, great as the interest of such friendships must necessarily be, they did not suffice to absorb his affections. No mistake could have been more complete than that of supposing that he cared only for the great and the famous. The richest outpourings of his heart and mind were in many cases reserved for men of whom the world knew little or nothing. He delighted in making the acquaintance of all those who were playing a leading part upon the stage of the day; but his truest friend ships were often with those whom fame had never reached, nor success gladdened. And it was no common blessing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
