During his remarkable life, John Charles Frémont served as a senator for the newly-formed state of California, led Union troops in the Civil War, and was governor of the territory of Arizona. His race for the presidency in 1856 brought prestige to the fledgling Republican Party, yet despite his popularity, his uncompromising determination to abolish slavery cost him the election. For all of his experiences in politics and the military, it was the earlier decades of Frémont's life that were the most exciting. Shortly after graduating from college, he joined a mapping expedition and surveyed the hills of South Carolina and Tennessee for the government. Eager to continue exploring, Frémont went on five more expeditions to America west of the Appalachians during the years from 1839 to 1846. Senator Thomas Hart Benton was a towering figure in Missouri politics. Elected in 1821, he was their first senator and served in Washington, DC, for more than thirty years. Like Andrew Jackson, with whom he had a long and complicated relationship, Benton came out of the developing western section of the young American Republic. The foremost Democratic leader in the Senate, he claimed to represent the rights of "the common man" against "monied interests" of the East. This bibliography of the Mexican War holdings of the libraries at the University of Texas at Arlington is the product of more than forty years' collecting and research. As a result of his recognition that Texana collections would be incomplete without items from the period up to the ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo by Mexico in May, 1848, Jenkins Garrett began this bibliography in earnest in the 1950s, at a time when Mexican War items were not even listed as a separate category by collectors. Arranged by chapters according to topics or type of holding, the bibliography is designed to give extensive and accurate descriptive information of approximately 2,500 items of interest to scholars and collectors. Each entry thus includes full title page wording, edition information, collation, other library locations, and notes, though the bibliography is not annotated per se.
