Excerpt from Memoirs of James Robert Hope-Scott of Abbotsford, Vol. 1 of 2: With Selections From His Correspondence A Few Observations Only are required by way of introduction to the Second Edition of these Memoirs. I have carefully revised the whole, but have made no changes that appear to require notice beyond the correction of clerical or typographical errors, and of a few mistakes as to matters of fact, the instances in all three classes being generally of small moment. I have also been able to decipher here and there a word which had formerly baffled me in the MSS. I have taken this opportunity of introducing a few additional documents of interest, especially an important letter of Mr. Gladstone's to Mr. Hope-Scott on his own early political career, for the use of which, with some other fresh extracts from their correspondence, I have to express my best thanks. A letter has also been added from the Hodgkin papers, which did not reach me in time for the First Edition, throwing further light on the Anglican period of Mr. Hope-Scott's religious history. Some striking passages from an article on Mr. Hope-Scott, contributed to Macmillans Magazine by Sir Francis Hastings Doyle, have been inserted, and an early letter of Sir Francis to Mr. Hope, relating a touching incident connected with the death of Arthur Hallam. James Robert Hope-Scott (1812-1873) was an English barrister and Tractarian. Born at Great Marlow, Berkshire and christened James Robert Hope, in 1847 he married Charlotte Harriet Jane Lockhart, daughter of John Gibson Lockhart and granddaughter of Sir Walter Scott, and, on her coming into possession of Abbotsford House six years later, he assumed the surname of Hope-Scott. As an established ecclesiastical lawyer, he was much involved in the Ecclesiastical Courts Bill in 1843 and the same year he took the DCL degree at Oxford. By the end of 1845 he stood at the head of the parliamentary bar but his objections to taking the Oath of Supremacy deterred him from accepting the professional honour of Queen's Counsel. In 1849, he therefore asked Lord Chancellor Charles Pepys, 1st Earl of Cottenham for, and was granted, a patent of precedence conferring equal status. He retired from the bar in 1870 and spent the rest of his life in charitable and literary work, in particular an abridgment of his father in law's seven volume biography of Scott with a preface dedicated to Gladstone.
