Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Celebrated Women of All Countries From this time her courage never failed. She is in my epi nion a most remarkable woman - perhaps the most remarkable I ever knew - for her courageous firmness in misfortune, her digni fied and admirable mildness in prosperity, and her resignation under the bitter affliction she has borne during the last eighteen years. For, knowing what she now suffers, I cannot at all compare this latter period with that during which she was only unfortunate. This is a different and more bitter trial; and if the accents of despair have sometimes been wrung from the lacerated bosom of Napoleon's mother, who among us can be surprised? Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Eminently Pious Women, Vol. 1 of 2: Who Were Ornaments to Their Sex, Blessings to Their Country, and Edifying Examples to the Church and World The Work, of which an improved Edition is now presented to the religious public, has progressively advanced to the state in which it now appears. What is now comprised in the first volume, was compiled by the Rev. Dr. Gibbons, and appeared in 1777, in two volumes 8vo. It was repub lished in 1804 with an additional volume, compiled by the Rev. Dr. Jerment. To these a third volume was added, in the year 1815, on the publication of a new and corrected edition. The Editor, in the preface to that edition, stated, however, that while he considered the Memoirs as exhibiting an interesting picture of genuine Christianity, he did not hold himself responsible for all the sentiments and Opinions thus recorded; especially in the former two volumes, which were given without any mate rial alteration. Book Description
Excerpt from Female Biography, or Memoirs of Illustrious and Celebrated Women, of All Ages and Countries, Vol. 6 of 6: Alphabetically Arranged This harmony received no other interruption than from the calamities with which the state was torn, when the proscription of the triumvirs deluged Home with blood. Octavia exerted on this occasion her in uence with her brother to humanise his heart, and put a stop to the effusion of Roman blood: she refused her protection and good offices to no one, while her house was the refuge of the unfortunate. When these troubles were in some degree allayed, Octaviva requested permission to retire, with her husband, from the tumults of the city, to devote themselves to the leisure of a tranquil and studious life: but the pleasure which Octavius experienced in their society frustrated the execution of this plan, and still detained them in the capital. Octavia took no share in the dissipations of the court, or the amusements common to her sex and rank: secluded in her house, and devoted to her husband, she as sisted him in his serious occupations, shared his pleasures, and passed in his society her most de lightful hours. Book Description
Excerpt from Lives of Celebrated Women IT is an oft-quoted proposition of Rousseau that the glory of woman lies in being unknown. If this be true, we shall deserve little credit for placing before the world these bnef sketches of a few of the sex who have acquired celebrity among mankind. We are disposed to think, however, that the oracular words of the Genevan philosopher though they may coincide with the despotism of the lords of creation, who would arrogate, not merely the sceptre of power, but the trump of fame, entirely to them selves like most other oracles, are liable to many exceptions. Book Description
Excerpt from Female Biography, Vol. 6 of 6: Or Memoirs of Illustrious and Celebrated Women, of All Ages and Countries; Alphabetically Arranged Wishes of a virtuous and tender heart. Marcellus loved his wife with entire affection, and confided in' her as a friend: they seemed animated but by one' soul; while their affections, their pursuits, theirl taste, and their judgment, were in perfect unison. This harmony received no other interruption'than' from the calamities with which the state was torn, when the proscription of the triumvirs deluged Home with blood. Memoirs of an American Lady, Vol. 1 of 2

Memoirs of an American Lady, Vol. 1 of 2 PDF Author: Mrs. Anne Grant
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780428673239
Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 340

Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of an American Lady, Vol. 1 of 2: With Sketches of Manners and Scenery in America, as They Existed Previous to the Revolution In preparing a new edition of this genuine picture of our ancestors prior to the amazing changes pro duced by the Revolution, a picture which Paulding informed me suggested The Dutchman's Fireside, it has been thought that some account of the good and gifted lady to whom the world is indebted for the Memoir of Mrs. Schuyler would be acceptable, as well as the numerous accompanying notes. A number of these were contributed to the edition of 1876, by Joel Munsell, the Albany antiquarian, while other notes were supplied two decades after that date, by the late George W. Schuyler. In the Appendix will be found a sheaf of Mrs. Grant's hitherto unpublished letters, addressed to Mrs. Alexander Hamilton and Dr. Joseph G. Cogswell between the years 1819 - 1834, that it is believed will enhance the value of the volume. A fine steel portrait of the author appears as a frontispiece. For the larger portion of the illustrations of ancient Albany that are included, the editor is indebted to the courtesy of Col. Augustus Pruyn, who made the photographs from which they are reproduced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
