The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians PDF Author: Stanley Sadie
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 1000

Book Description
"This reference classic has approximately doubled in size since its last publication 20 years ago, and the expansion involves more than the thorough revision and addition of articles about music of the past. More articles about 20th-century composers and composer-performers have been added, as well as topical articles about the gender-related, multicultural, and interdisciplinary ways that music is now being studied. Add to these changes that New Grove is also available online, making it a source that would have made its many-faceted creator Sir George Grove proud"--Outstanding reference sources, American Libraries, May 2002.

These 10 Macedonian folk songs arranged for piano are an excellent introduction to the enchanting sounds and complex rhythms of Macedonia. For centuries, Macedonians have played these songs and others on traditional instruments, such as the kaval or gajda. Only in the late 20th century did the world begin to uncover the hidden gem of Macedonian folk music. Many arrangements and variations of Macedonian folk songs have been performed throughout the Balkans and Europe, but piano arrangements are scarce. With these 10 piano scores, I hope to expose piano students of all abilities to the beautiful melodies of Macedonia while allowing them to grow their skills and love for the piano. Hopefully, the traditional music from the heart of the Balkans will fill your heart with joy and happiness as it has already done for Macedonians around the world. Macedonia. . .Em Baba, Em Nevesta

Macedonia. . .Em Baba, Em Nevesta PDF Author: Kathy C Dimitrievski, PhD
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
The history, culture, language, and geography of Macedonia, as told through its folk songs, from ancient civilization to modern times, is the focus of this book . Secondly, this book considers how the folk song acts as a means of informal education. Em, Baba, Em Nevesta (Grandmother, as well as, Young Bride) is a personification the author uses to describe Macedonia having ancient roots, as well as being a New Republic (since 1991). Here we have a thorough and well-researched doctoral dissertation study, on the ground, in six countries, over multiple generations in families, and across the globe, through an Internet survey. Strong support and recognition was received for this project in all the locations. Participants, who had not sung for years, broke their silence. And those passionate about singing, filled the air with their voices. This book is a presentation of the research findings from Dr. Kathy Dimitrievski's doctoral dissertation (Phd, University of Buffalo, 2000). Oral histories, in the Republic of Macedonia, the annexed parts (Egej, Pirin, Mala Prespa), and the diaspora, along with Internet survey results, shed a light on the importance of the Macedonian folk song, over generations. The interviews include famous singers of the song, and many heart wrenching stories of the difficulty of life and the separation of family, known all too well by Macedonians, as a result of the annexations and sojourning. Above all, one can see a perseverance in spirit, faith in God, and strong family support, under the most difficult circumstances, including Communism, and suppression under the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Heroes emerged, to gain independence for Macedonia, and are highly represented in the folk songs. The author, an American woman, married to a Macedonian immigrant, learned the language, which was critical in these interviews, almost all of them having been conducted using the Macedonian language.

Traditional Songs and Music of the Korçë Region of Albania

Traditional Songs and Music of the Korçë Region of Albania PDF Author: Eno Koço
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527510409
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
This book is concerned with the repertory of traditional urban song and music of the Korçë area in general and more specifically the karakteristike (characteristic) or ‘distinctive’ song associated with Korçë city, Albania. The first half of the 20th century marked the climax of an evolution which started in the mid-19th century with the oral tradition of urban song in Korçë. While the translation of ‘Kënga Karakteristike Korçare’ into ‘Korçare Distinctive Song’ seems to be an odd name for a genre, it is, however, a translation as close as possible to the original Albanian, denoting the characteristic songs of Korçë. The term ‘characteristic’ implies peculiar or specific songs, different not only from the traditional urban song of Korçë, but also from any kind of song, whether folk, popular, traditional urban or art, composed and performed among the Korçë people. The book also introduces the Korçare urban song and urban lyric song, as well as the Saze music, which were introduced during the Ottoman domination of the Balkans.

Romani Routes

Romani Routes PDF Author: Carol Silverman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195300947
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 437

Book Description
Now that the political and economic plight of European Roma and the popularity of their music are objects of international attention, Romani Routes provides a timely and insightful view into Romani communities both in their home countries and in the diaspora. Over the past two decades, a steady stream of recordings, videos, feature films, festivals, and concerts has presented the music of Balkan Gypsies, or Roma, to Western audiences, who have greeted them with exceptional enthusiasm. Yet, as author Carol Silverman notes, Roma are revered as musicians and reviled as people. In this book, Silverman introduces readers to the people and cultures who produce this music, offering a sensitive and incisive analysis of how Romani musicians address the challenges of discrimination. Focusing on southeastern Europe then moving to the diaspora, her book examines the music within Romani communities, the lives and careers of outstanding musicians, and the marketing of music in the electronic media and "world music" concert circuit. Silverman touches on the way that the Roma exemplify many qualities -- adaptability, cultural hybridity, transnationalism--that are taken to characterize late modern experience. And rather than just celebrating these qualities, she presents the musicians as complicated, pragmatic individuals who work creatively within the many constraints that inform their lives.
