Book Description
It's Meihui's special year of the ox! Through her family's story we learn about what it means to be an ox and all of their special traits. Most people in places like North America and Europe celebrate the new year on January 1st. But some cultures, like those in many areas of Asia, do it differently. They celebrate the new year based on the lunar-solar calendar, so the date differs every year. It occurs between January 21st and February 20th. Some cultures also follow a 12-year cycle, with a different animal representing each year. Our story takes us to the land where these animals live. In this land of animals, they have created a system of fairness to rule their community. Instead of a king, queen, prime minister, or president, they have a family who together lead for an entire year. The order in which these animal families serve was determined long ago by their friend Buddha, who had a dinner party. Only 12 animals came to the dinner. Their special celebration years are forever ordered by the time at which the animals arrived to the party, first through last. So once every 12 years, it's one of these animals' turn to shine and serve their community. To give everyone in each animal family a chance to lead their community, they also honor one of the five elements: metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. When a baby animal is born, it is assigned one of these elements to match its personality. Each year also has a special element. When the personality element and the year match, it is that animal's super special birthday year!

Book Description
An elaborate and pervasive set of practices, called guanxi, underlies everyday social relationships in contemporary China. Obtaining and changing job assignments, buying certain foods and consumer items, getting into good hospitals, buying train tickets, obtaining housing, even doing business—all such tasks call for the skillful and strategic giving of gifts and cultivating of obligation, indebtedness, and reciprocity. Mayfair Mei-hui Yang's close scrutiny of this phenomenon serves as a window to view facets of a much broader and more complex cultural, historical, and political formation. Using rich and varied ethnographic examples of guanxi stemming from her fieldwork in China in the 1980s and 1990s, the author shows how this "gift economy" operates in the larger context of the socialist state redistributive economy.

Book Description
From the Huguenots in the seventeenth century, Irish silk weavers in the late 1700s and East European Jews at the turn of the twentieth century through to recent immigrants from South-east Asia, East London has been shaped by a multicultural reality closely linked to a unique spirit of creative enterprise. Over the last thirty years in particular, the area has been transformed from a crumbling no-go area on the fringe of the nation's capital into a cluster of hip neighbourhoods buzzing with creative energy where a wide range of communities have come together. Voices East London connects the dots around the creative perspectives that make the area unique while providing colourful glimpses into its past by means of dynamic interviews with eighty of the area's leading movers and shakers. Among them are such artists, designers and cultural leaders as Gilbert & George, Sue Webster, Langlands & Bell, Charles Saumarez Smith, Iwona Blazwick, Maureen Paley, Viktor Wynd, Sandra Esquilant, David Waddington and Pablo Flack. Brimming with striking new photography and engaging insights into a distinctive milieu, Voices East London demonstrates that the area has well and truly moved beyond its old Dickensian aura.

Book Description
Long before he was the taco seller whose 'Gringo Dog' recipe made him famous throughout Mexico City, our hero was an aspiring artist: an artist, that is, till his would-be girlfriend was stolen by Diego Rivera, and his dreams snuffed out by his hypochondriac mother. Now our hero is resident in a retirement home, where fending off boredom is far more grueling than making tacos. Plagued by the literary salon that bumps about his building's lobby and haunted by the self-pitying ghost of a neglected artist, Villalobos's old man can't help but misbehave: he antagonises his neighbors, tortures American missionaries with passages from Adorno, and flirts with the revolutionary greengrocer.

It is a great pleasure to present this book, edited by a distinguished team at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and with excellent contributors from nine countries in the region and beyond. The book is a truly comparative work which significantly advances conceptual understanding. The comparisons undertaken are at many levels and with different units for analysis. One chapter undertakes comparison in two cities (Hong Kong and Guangzhou), three chapters make comparisons between two eountries (South Korea and Singapore; Solomon Islands and Vanuatu; South Korea and China); and five chapters undertake eomparisons across the whole region. Other on individual countries or, in one case, on a single schoo!. In addition, ehapters foeus several chapters examine the attitudes and roles played by individuals and groups within societies. The book is thus an admirable example of the vitality of the field of comparative education in selecting different units for analysis and in examination of issues from diverse angles. Within the book, moreover, readers will find a fascinating array of settings and environments. On the one hand, for example, is Japan with its relatively homogenous eulture, a population of 126 million, and a strong national identity based on language and history. On the other hand is Solomon Islands, which has a population of just 400,000 scattered over 1,000 islands, approximately 90 indigenous languages, and major social problems arising from culture c\ashes, econornic forces, political dyna mies and legacies of colonialism.

Book Description
Dustin Donati, an Italian American in his mid-twenties, lives in Shanghai, working as a history teacher in an international school. He is obsessed with the figure of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, whom he reads constantly. Hanging out with some friends, Dustin meets two young women the same night: Lu Mei and Liu Fen. Lu Mei is charismatic, intelligent, and cultivated, while Liu Fen is one of the most stunning, exceptionally beautiful girls Dustin has ever met. From that night onward, Dustin starts intimating with them. Dustin venerates Schopenhauer's philosophy as a sacred truth until his romantic experiences make him question some of his most deeply rooted metaphysical views on love and human relationships. Traveling from Shanghai to New Orleans to Harbin, Dream of a Schopenhauerian is a novel unafraid to ask complex questions about the ultimate meaning of love.
