Computing systems are now reaping the benefits of this quest for mobility. Since their inception in the late 1970's FrE80, GfB79, wireless local area networks have been thrust to the forefront of networking alternatives especially when confronted with difficult or impossible obstacles sometimes associated with wired networks such as routing cables and spontaneous ad hoc LANs. Before a wireless LAN is considered, system capabilities, cost, and limitations must be given due consideration. To gain user acceptance, a wireless LAN must sustain data rates comparable with wired networks, gracefully control the inherently larger number of bit errors, and allow inter-operability with heterogeneous vendor products. Pivotal to network performance, the medium access control (MAC) is the protocol used by all stations within the network to control when each station is allowed to transmit and ultimately determines the degree to which the aforementioned factors satisfy the user. Current wireless LANs are artificially limiting their performance by using a wired LAN MAC model. This 'worst case' model assumes that once the medium suffers a performance degradation, it cannot be improved.

This brief investigates distributed medium access control (MAC) with QoS provisioning for both single- and multi-hop wireless networks including wireless local area networks (WLANs), wireless ad hoc networks, and wireless mesh networks. For WLANs, an efficient MAC scheme and a call admission control algorithm are presented to provide guaranteed QoS for voice traffic and, at the same time, increase the voice capacity significantly compared with the current WLAN standard. In addition, a novel token-based scheduling scheme is proposed to provide great flexibility and facility to the network service provider for service class management. Also proposed is a novel busy-tone based distributed MAC scheme for wireless ad hoc networks and a collision-free MAC scheme for wireless mesh networks, respectively, taking the different network characteristics into consideration. The proposed schemes enhance the QoS provisioning capability to real-time traffic and, at the same time, significantly improve the system throughput and fairness performance for data traffic, as compared with the most popular IEEE 802.11 MAC scheme.

Recent advances in portable computing and wireless technologies are opening up exciting possibilities for the future of wireless mobile networking. More notably, Wireless Local and Personal Area Networks (WLANs and WPANs) technologies are expected to revolutionize the way we live. Given their unprecedented importance, in this dissertation we investigate and suggest new solutions in the context of WLANs and WPANs systems. In the world of WLANs, we study its major representative, namely, the IEEE standard 802.11, while we explore the Bluetooth technology as it is the most prominent solution in the world of WPANs. In the field of Bluetooth, we have identified key issues and made considerable contributions. We have carried out a detailed analytical and simulation analysis of radio interference impact on Bluetooth and proposed ways of mitigating it, such as a novel interference-aware packet segmentation protocol (IBLUES). Moreover, we also introduce an integrated IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth architecture (BlueStar), which enables efficient information interchange between these two widely used technologies. BlueStar is analyzed in great detail and, among other things, it features a new coexistence method between IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth which employs a novel combination of carrier sense and adaptive frequency hopping. Next, to handle the inefficiency of the current Bluetooth master/slave communication paradigm, we propose a novel QoS-driven dynamic slot assignment and piconet partitioning algorithms. In the context of IEEE 802.11, we initially investigate advanced MAC-based routing strategies. These strategies, referred to as COPAS (contention-based path selection), are intentionally devised and observed to boost TCP performance over the multi-hop type of IEEE 802.11 ad hoc networks, giventhat TCP is by far the most important and widely used transport protocol in today2s networks. Finally, we design and evaluate a new power control MAC protocol for spatial reusability over ad hoc networks, which is observed to considerably outperform existing MAC protocols. We conclude with some promising future work in the areas of both Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11.

In order to efficiently utilize the scarce wireless resource as well as keep up with the ever-increasing demand for Quality-of-Service (QoS) of multimedia applications, wireless networks are undergoing rapid development and dramatic changes in the underlying technologies and protocols. The Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, which coordinates the channel access and data transmission of wireless stations, plays a pivotal role in wireless networks. Performance modelling and analysis has been and continues to be of great theoretical and practical importance in the design and development of wireless networks. This research is devoted to developing efficient and cost-effective analytical tools for the performance analysis and enhancement of MAC protocols in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) under heterogeneous multimedia traffic. To support the MAC-layer QoS in WLANs, the IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol has proposed three QoS differentiation schemes in terms of Arbitrary Inter-Frame Space (AIFS), Contention Window (CW), and Transmission Opportunity (TXOP). This research starts with the development of new analytical models for the TXOP scheme specified in the EDCA protocol under Poisson traffic. A dynamic TXOP scheme is then proposed to adjust the TXOP limits according to the status of the transmission queue. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments show that the proposed dynamic scheme largely improves the performance of TXOP. To evaluate the TXOP scheme in the presence of ii heterogeneous traffic, a versatile analytical model is developed to capture the traffic heterogeneity and model the features of burst transmission. The performance results highlight the importance of taking into account the heterogeneous traffic for the accurate evaluation of the TXOP scheme in wireless multimedia networks. To obtain a thorough and deep understanding of the performance attributes of the EDCA protocol, a comprehensive analytical model is then proposed to accommodate the integration of the three QoS schemes of EDCA in terms of AIFS, CW, and TXOP under Poisson traffic. The performance results show that the TXOP scheme can not only support service differentiation but also improve the network performance, whereas the AIFS and CW schemes provide QoS differentiation only. Moreover, the results demonstrate that the MAC buffer size has considerable impact on the QoS performance of EDCA under Poisson traffic. To investigate the performance of EDCA in wireless multimedia networks, an analytical model is further developed for EDCA under heterogeneous traffic. The performance results demonstrate the significant effects of heterogeneous traffic on the total delay and frame losses of EDCA with different buffer sizes. Finally, an efficient admission control scheme is presented for the IEEE 802.11e WLANs based on analytical modelling and a game-theoretical approach. The admission control scheme can maintain the system operation at an optimal point where the utility of the Access Point (AP) is maximized with the QoS constraints of various users.
