Polymers for Photonics Applications II

Polymers for Photonics Applications II PDF Author: Kwang-Sup Lee
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540456422
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
The future of information technology requires ultra high speed processing and large data storage capacity. Since the electronics technology using semi conduc tors and inorganic materials is about to reach its limits, much current research is focused on utilizing much faster photons than electrons, namely photonics. To achieve any significant effect on the actual use of the science of photonics, devel opments of more efficient photonics materials, better optical property evaluations, manufacture of devices for system applications, etc. are the subjects which need to be explored. In particular, the development of photonics materials stands in the forefront of research as this constitutes the most pertinent factor with regard to the development of ultra high speed and large capacity information processing. In this respect, there has been continuous research on photo responsive materials through molecular structure design and architecture and the results so far are very promising as functions and performances are beginning to realize their high expectations. The two special volumes "Polymers for Photonics Applications" give authorita tive and critical reviews on up to date activities in various fields of photonic poly mers including their promising applications. Seven articles have been contributed by internationally recognized and they deal with, polymers for second and third order nonlinear optics, quadratic parametric interactions in polymer waveguides, electroluminescent polymers as light sources, photoreflective polymers for holo graphic information storage, and highly efficient two photon absorbing organics and polymers.

Laser Scanning

Laser Scanning PDF Author: Chau-Chang Wang
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 9533072059
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 580

Book Description
Ever since the invention of laser by Schawlow and Townes in 1958, various innovative ideas of laser-based applications emerge very year. At the same time, scientists and engineers keep on improving laser's power density, size, and cost which patch up the gap between theories and implementations. More importantly, our everyday life is changed and influenced by lasers even though we may not be fully aware of its existence. For example, it is there in cross-continent phone calls, price tag scanning in supermarkets, pointers in the classrooms, printers in the offices, accurate metal cutting in machine shops, etc. In this volume, we focus the recent developments related to laser scanning, a very powerful technique used in features detection and measurement. We invited researchers who do fundamental works in laser scanning theories or apply the principles of laser scanning to tackle problems encountered in medicine, geodesic survey, biology and archaeology. Twenty-eight chapters contributed by authors around the world to constitute this comprehensive book.

Toxins and Other Harmful Compounds in Foods

Toxins and Other Harmful Compounds in Foods PDF Author: A. Witczak
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 131535151X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 593

Book Description
Toxins and Other Harmful Compounds in Foods provides information on the contents, distribution, chemical properties, and biological activity of toxins and other harmful compounds in foods that are natural components of the raw materials, accumulated due to microbial actions and environmental pollution, or are generated due to processing. This book shows how different factors related to the production of raw materials, as well as to storage and processing conditions, affect the presence and concentration of toxins and other harmful compounds in foods. It shows how various regulations, as well as unit operations and processes used in food production, may eliminate different toxins or generate new ones. The real health hazards for the consumers resulting from the presence of toxic/harmful compounds in aliments are discussed, and various national and international regulations obligatory in agriculture and industry aimed at increasing food safety are presented. Methods of analysis used for detection and determination of undesirable compounds are also discussed, making it possible to understand the effect of storage and processing parameters, as well as systems of quality assurance, on food safety and to select optimum procedures for analytical control.

Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications I

Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications I PDF Author: Peter Günter
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783540183327
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
This is the first of two volumes that review, for the first time, all major aspects of photorefractive effects and their applications. Photorefractive effects in electro-optic crystals are based on optically induced space-charge fields which ultimately alter the refractive indices by the electro-optic Pockels effect. The fundamental phenomena leading to photoinduced changes of refractive index, the materials requirements and experimental results on a variety of photorefractive materials are discussed and the most recent theoretical models describing these phenomena are presented. Interest in photorefractive materials has increased in recent years mainly because of their potential for nonlinear optical devices and for optical signals processing applications. Most of these applications are reviewed in the second volume devoted to this topic. The contributions to these two volumes are written by experts on each topic and are intended for scientists and engineers active in the field and for researchers and graduate students entering the field. Over 300 references to original papers on photorefractive and associated phenomena are cited.

Fundamentals of Mass Spectrometry

Fundamentals of Mass Spectrometry PDF Author: Kenzo Hiraoka
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461472334
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Most research and all publications in mass spectrometry address either applications or practical questions of procedure. This book, in contrast, discusses the fundamentals of mass spectrometry. Since these basics (physics, chemistry, kinetics, and thermodynamics) were worked out in the 20th century, they are rarely addressed nowadays and young scientists have no opportunity to learn them. This book reviews a number of useful methods in mass spectrometry and explains not only the details of the methods but the theoretical underpinning.
