Book Description
Excerpt from Meditations for Layfolk To confront ourselves every morning with some deep truth of revela tion is to realize our dignity as Christians. The high doctrine that St. Paul taught to his converts, men indeed just rescued from a rather degraded paganism, insisted always on the lofty position to which each had been called. He dealt with the sinner by making him realize that he was intended to be a saint. All of us need this inspiriting view of our vocation. Our lives are cast in mean streets, and we therefore count them without honour or value. Conscious simply of their pettiness, we make no attempt to see their true grandeur. We see but dimly if we see only the vision of the glory of the world. Taking, then, day by day a glimpse at one or other of the mysteries of God, we shall surely be led to understand ever more and more the worth of those souls of ours for which Christ did not disdain to die. There will of course be no need to worry ourselves if through some cause or other we are not able each day to fit in our meditation. So long as we can make it a general rule, we can well afford to allow some exceptions. But perhaps the word meditation itself sounds too alarming? We think not, for by this time the old fear of it as an intellectual gymnastic exercise of exceptional skill should have vanished. Meditations for Layfolk

Book Description
For a great many of the laity, Catholic life consists simply in the Sunday Mass, the occasional sacraments, and daily prayers; and this narrow practice they would defend as though it were all that they were, in virtue of their state, called upon to show. Now, it is surely to be regretted that the whole treasury of the Church, which is most needed just by those whose busy lives are crammed with material interests, should be left to the hands of so small a proportion of her children. Is it any wonder that prayers become listless and uninteresting, that Mass itself develops into routine, that the sacraments become badges of respectability, or, at the most, professions of faith? The real inner life, which Christ came to endow with fuller life, shrivels up.

Benedictus Dominus

Benedictus Dominus PDF Author: R. M. Benson

Pages : 478

Book Description
Excerpt from Benedictus Dominus: A Course of Meditations for Every Day of the Year The Antiphons belonging to the Benedictus have been chosen as the basis of these Meditations, and the Opening words of that Canticle seem to supply a fitting name for the series. Surely we ought to approach our Meditation constantly with an utterance of Blessing and Praise to our Covenant God. It is hoped that this Book will thus have a particular interest and use fulness for those who are in the habit Of reciting the Canonical Hours. It will not be the less serviceable for Churchmen at large. These Antiphons are themselves generally culled from the Scriptures which occur for use in the Com munion Service Of the day, and are of course suitable in themselves for the particular season at which they are found. The Invitations of Our Lord PDF Author: Joseph Gayle Hurd Barry

Book Description
Excerpt from The Invitations of Our Lord: Notes of Meditations These Outlines of Meditations are published in response to what seems a real demand for such books. I am asked from time to time to recom mend books of outlines, and have found that the number of such books prepared for the use of the laity is very limited. I hope therefore that I am offering a book that will be useful, and in offering it I have no ambition beyond that. It is prepared on the basis of notes that have been tested in parish and retreat work and have been found not unacceptable. I have aimed at some thing between a fully worked out meditation and a bald'outline, because that seems 'to me to be what many want. I have worked out the pre ludes fully for no other reason than that I found it interesting to do. I have prefixed at my pub. Rests by the River

Rests by the River PDF Author: George Matheson

Category : Poetry

Pages : 384

Book Description
Excerpt from Rests by the River: Devotional Meditations The pages of Saint Andrew, an organ of the Church of Scotland. They are intended for devotional moments; but by devotional moments I do not mean moments of vacuity. It is not in its season of intellectual barrenness that the soul yields its spiritual fruit. Religious sentiment, if it is worth anything, must be preceded by religious perception. According, I have divided each of these pieces into two parts -the first containing a thought and the second either an invocation or a prayer; the Whole piece may be read in three minutes. This is the age of brevity, and I have tried to put intensity in the place of extension. The appeals are to various moods of mind if some of them should.
