Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Services, General History, Vol. 2: The Medical Services on the Western Front, and During the Operations in France and Belgium in 1914 and 1915 HE general scope of the series of volumes dealing with the Medical History Of the War has been indicated in the Preface to the first volume of the General History of the Medical Services. Since the publication Of this in December 1921 the volumes on the Diseases, Surgery and the Hygiene of the War and on Pathology have appeared and the three remaining volumes of the General History have been prepared, although some time must elapse before all these are published. The compilation of the volume on Statistics is being under taken by the Ministry Of Pensions, which is in possession of the necessary data. The present volume, together with the greater part of the third volume of the General History, deals with the Medical Services of the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium. It has been compiled almost entirely from the war diaries of medical units, from the Office files and diaries of the Administrative Medical Services, and from the official despatches; but as some of the war diaries are missing altogether and many fail to record facts which are Of import ance in compiling a history, several gaps have had to be filled from personal diaries and information Obtained from various other sources. The war diaries are, in fact, of very unequal value. The most useful have been those which give Sketch maps, details of the position and work of the medical units and changes in organization and policy, but these important details have been omitted in a considerable number of instances. The campaign on the Western Front was characterized, so far as the Medical Services were concerned, by the unparalleled number of wounded who came under their charge. In com piling the history Oi the Medical Services Of this front, it has on this account been considered desirable, after a more general description Of the administrative services and the medical units, to present a detailed account of their strategical and tactical employment in the various battles and phases of the campaign. Medical (Campaign) Services Vol 2(official History of the Great War Based on Official Documents)

Medical (Campaign) Services Vol 2(official History of the Great War Based on Official Documents) PDF Author: Major General Sir W. G. MacPherson

Book Description
Our picture of the Great War is indelibly bound up with the suffering of the soldiers who fought. Lines of men blinded by poison gas hanging on to their comrades; wounded soldiers on stretchers patiently awaiting treatment; stretcher bearers themselves struggling through the mud to bring their comrades aid and succour; and the unbearably poignant pictures of limbless or shell-shocked troops in hospital back in Blighty struggling to come to terms with their devastating conditions. The story of the military medical services in the war is a fascinating but little-told one Now the Naval and Military Press is proud to republish that story, in the shape of these reprints of the rare Official Histories of the Army's medical service compiled by Major-General Sir W. G. Macpherson. The service in 1914 was much improved thanks to reforms after the Boer War, in which thousands of troops had died needlessly of disease thanks to the lack of proper medical care. In 1914, by contrast, the service was ready to cope with high casualties. The author was himself deputy-director of the Army's medical service throughout the war, and is described as having a 'genius for organisation and improving the service and untiring energy'.His four-volume history is no dry-as-dust record of administration as one might expect, but a practical, well-written day to day description of how the wounded and sick were cared for from front line casualty clearing stations to base hospitals far behind the lines. It skilfully weaves essential medical details and statistics into a narrative of battles and campaigns from every theatre of the war. It is also a record of a steep learning curve, as the medical services struggled - often successfully - to keep abreast with casualties inflicted by the changing technology of war. At first, in 1914, most wounds were caused by bullets, but with the increasing use of artillery, shell splinters, shrapnel balls and poison gas accounted for the majority. The heavily manured soil of France and Flanders ensured hat there was a high incidence of tetanus and gas gangrene. The use of blood transfusions, and increased understanding of the importance of blood groups, saved many lives, while behind the lines the pioneering use of plastic surgery strove to repair the hideous damage inflicted by weapons of war. This is a moving record of compassion in action, and of a service which stove to mitigate, heal and help relieve the inevitable suffering caused by the most destructive war that the world had yet seen.

Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Services; General History, Vol. 3: Medical Services During the Operations on the Western Front in 1916, 1917 and 1918; In Italy; And in Egypt and Palestine HE chapters in this volume have been compiled mainly from the War Diaries and Official Despatches, but owing to many of the former being missing, a considerable amount of information in connexion with the chapters on the medical services in Egypt and during the Sinai and Palestine operations has been Obtained from officers who held administrative medical appointments during these operations, chiefly from major-general Sir R. Ford, who was the Director of Medical Services in Egypt, from 511 R. Luce and from lieut.-colonel J. J. Abraham, the Assistant Director of Medical Services on the Palestine Lines of Communication. The majority of the small photographs in the text, illustrative of various situations of divisional medical services on the Western Front, have been Obtained from Captain R. T. Bruce, who served with a field ambulance of the Slst (highland) Division. Several of the photographs in the text of the preceding volume were also obtained from this Officer. The other photographs are from official sources, several of them, notably those in the chapter on the Medical Services in Italy, having been supplied by lieut.-colone1 F. S. Brereton, who visited areas of operation with a view to Obtaining material for the Imperial War Museum and the Medical History of the War. The compiler is again deeply indebted to brig-general J. E. Edmonds, the Director of the Military Branch of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence, for his valuable assistance in reading through the manuscript. The limitations of time and space, which had been imposed for the completion of the Medical History of the War, made it difficult to introduce incidents that would render this and other volumes more attractive to the general reader. All that has been attempted therefore has been to provide a basis on which those who are desirous of studying more closely the medical situation during the various battles and phases of the war may be able to reconstruct with the aid of the maps the chief features of the work of the medical services.
