Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Portrait Gallery, Vol. 2: Biographical Memoirs of the Most Celebrated Physicians, Surgeons, Etc;, Etc;, Who Have Contributed to the Advancement of Medical Science The Count was wounded in the arm - the bullet had sunk deep into the flesh -it was, however, extracted - and he is now in a fair way of recovery.' That Will do very well for a novel, but it won't do for us, Gentlemen for Sir Ralph Aber cromby received a ball in the thick part of his thigh, and it buried itself deep, deep: and it got among important parts, and it couldn't be felt; but the surgeons, nothing daunted, groped, and groped, and groped, and Sir Ralph died. Then he would enter upon an admirable discourse on the nature of gun shot wounds - their peculiar character - the course they followed - and he would reprobate, in the strongest manner, the impropriety and danger of seeking after balls in deep-seated parts, or in the cavities of the human body. Then he would contrast the improvements that had been made by the modems over the practice of the ancients; and, by the relation of often ludicrous and always interesting anecdotes, fix the subject on the minds of his pupils in the most indelible manner. Pages : 313

Book Description
William Charles Wells (1757-1817) was one of the foremost, and forgotten, American scientists of the eighteenth century. He should be acknowledged as laying the foundations for modern studies of vestibular function as well as eye movements. This book reprints his Essay on single vision with two eyes (1792) and his own Memoir of his life (1818). Wells’ essay on natural selection is reprinted as an Appendix. Wells' experiments and observations on natural phenomena will surprise students of science because of their modernity.

The Moving Tablet of the Eye

The Moving Tablet of the Eye PDF Author: Nicholas Wade

Category : Medical

Pages : 336

Book Description
Eye movements are a vital part of our interaction with the world. They play a pivotal role in perception, cognition, and education. Research in this field is now proceeding at a considerable pace and casting new light on how the eyes move and what information we can derive during the frequentand brief periods of fixation. However, the origins of this work are less well known, even though much of our knowledge was derived from this research with far more primitive equipment. This book is unique in tracing the history of eye movement research. It shows how great strides were made in this area before modern recording devices were available, especially in the measurement of nystagmus. When photographic techniques were adapted to measure discontinuous eye movements, fromabout 1900, many of the issues that are now basic to modern research were then investigated. One of the earliest cognitive tasks examined was reading, and it remains in the vanguard of contemporary research. Modern researchers in this field will be astonished at the subtleties of these early experimental studies and the ingenuity of interpretations that were advanced one and even two centuries ago. Though physicians often carried out the original eye movement research, later on it was pursued bypsychologists - it is within contemporary neuroscience that we find these two strands reunited. Anyone interested in the origins of psychology and neuroscience will find much to stimulate and surprise them in this valuable new work.
