Challenges of Pharmacoeconomics in Global Health Arena PDF Author: Mihajlo (Michael) Jakovljevic

Book Description
The pace of globalization has significantly accelerated since the end of the Cold War Era in 1989. These changes profoundly affected health care systems worldwide. Health policy makers increasingly started facing new harsh challenges in their uneasy task to provide universal health coverage and decent equity of access to medical services. Among the most prominent demand-side issues are extended longevity joined with population aging, rise of non-communicable diseases, and growing patient expectations. Supply-side causes are gains in societal welfare and living standards, technological innovation in medicine and continuing rapid urbanization in developing world regions. Successful insurance-based risk sharing agreements made drug dispensing and medical service provision cheap or virtually free at the point of consumption in most OECD and many middle-income countries. Coupled with massive build-up of workforce capacities and strengthening of primary care and hospital networks, all these factors contributed to the “supplier induced demand” phenomenon. There is straightforward historical evidence of long-term growth in pharmaceutical and overall health spending both in absolute and GDP% terms worldwide. The accumulated constraints deriving from skyrocketing costs of care were felt in many areas of clinical medicine even among the richest societies. Cardinal examples of expensive and hardly affordable therapeutic areas are orphan drugs indicated to treat rare diseases and targeted biologicals used in autoimmune disorders and cancer. Last but not least, is troubled and frequently denied access to even essential generic pharmaceuticals still taking place in many nations. This appears to be particularly the case among the world's poor and under-served citizens residing in rural and suburban areas of low- and middle-income countries. To a large extent, these difficulties are worsened by lack of evidence-based resource allocation strategies and less sustainable financing strategies.

Medical Dominance

Medical Dominance PDF Author: Evan Willis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000299538
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
Medical Dominance, now in a revised edition, provides a fascinating account of the medical profession's successful domination of a wide range of health care services. Evan Willis delves into the past to explain the existing division of labour and health care, the rise of the medical profession to a position of economic power within the health system, and their defence of that dominant position. Now completely revised and updated, this edition also considers the related question of the policy implications of medical dominance. The defence by doctors of their position of power is highlighted by the author's exhaustive and original research into demarcation struggles between medicine and other health occupations, in particular midwifery, optometry and chiropractic. Conventional explanations of medical dominance are challenged by the argument that the role of developments in medical knowledge and in technology itself have been overstated. As well, greater account must be taken of the social relations and struggles which developed for control of that knowledge and technology.

The challenge is to learn more about the various systems in medical education throughout the world and identify advantages and disadvantages, a process from which we can all (and most importantly our patients) benefit from. This book is a compilation of the experiences, thoughts, and "best-practice" advice of a panel of international experts on medical and surgical education.

Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
It is my great pleasure to introduce this special issue of LNSV comprising the sci- tific publications presented at ehealth 2009: The second Congress on Electronic Healthcare for the 21st Century, which took place in Istanbul, Turkey during September 23–25, 2009. Building on the first ehealth 2008 congress held in London, UK, the key topic of ehealth 2009 was investigating a realistic potential of the Internet in providing e- dence-based healthcare information and education to patients and global users. The proudly defined aim of ehealth 2009 –– bringing together the three medical sectors: academia, industry and global healthcare institutions –– was met and made the c- gress a truly unique event. The formal and informal discussions among the conference participants led to numerous stimuli for new collaborations. We accepted 26 full and 10 short technical presentations by speakers from all over the world, having received over 80 submissions. In addition to two keynotes, the commercial angle was provided by invited industrial speakers representing a wide range of healthcare IT companies including Corinne Marsolier of Cisco, Glenn Kenneth Bruun (CSAM Health), Luis Falcón (Thymbra) and Johan Muskens (Philips Research Europe), as well as international healthcare organizations such as Med-e-Tel represented by the international coordinator Frederic Lievens.
