Dr. Drummond's and Mr. Morison's first case was a woman, aged forty-two. Early in 1893, Swelling Of her feet and legs was noticed. A few months later the abdomen became distended with fluid. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 8: December, 1908 In May, 1905, children were first taken to the unimproved roof for systematic open-air treatment. The doors Of the sun room and elevator were too narrow for the passage of adult beds, SO it resulted that this treatment was limited to children. Cribs on wheels, rolling stretchers, wheel-chairs and carrying in arms, were the available means of transportation. The eastern Side of the sun-room, aided by a glass and wooden screen on the north Side, furnished such protection that even in snow-storms of the following early winter the children were taken for Six hours to the roof. This daily airing Of the patients was found to be rather more beneficial than the most sanguine had expected. Book Description
Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 3: January, 1898 The periodical publication of technical reports Of hospital work may be said to constitute a more or less complete epitome Of the progress Of the healing art. It would be safe to assert that such reports, if they were everywhere recorded at the end Of ten years, would be a faithful representation Of the progress Of our knowledge Of disease and Of the means adopted for the relief Of every human ailment. This statement could not be made of the experience Of any individual practitioner and the records Of individual - inde pendent Of hospital - experience would be incomplete and com paratively Of little value. The literature, therefore, which hospitals contribute to the knowledge Of medicine and surgery, must always be the foundation and the measure Of the science and art Of healing. The appreciation Of this fact has been recognized from the earliest its value and significance are more strikingly illustrated in the last twenty-five years than ever before, for the reason that the results have been more exact and the increase Of knowledge has been SO vast.
