They are to be delivered in Edinburgh and repeated in Glasgow, or delivered in Glasgow and repeated in Edinburgh, or delivered and repeated in such other places as the trustees may direct. The lectures are then to be published, and copies are to be presented to certain libraries in this country, continental Europe, America, India, Africa, and Australia. The trustees are men belonging to different denominations, and the lectureris to be a minister, professor, or godly layman of any Evangelical Church.' Excerpt from Missions and Apostles of Medieval Europe For though it may be true that in early times the Teuton knew nothing of temples made with hands, that the Deity, whom no enclosure could contain, or mortal form rep resent, received the adoration of his wor shippers in the obscurity of the wood, or on the lonely mountain-top, yet without doubt the introduction of an elaborate form of polytheism brought with it in time a more elaborate form of external worship. The transition from the sacred oak-grove to the hill altar and the cairn was easy. Equally easy the transition thence to the temple of wood, with its nave and shrine, its holy place, and its holy of holies. In the Norse temples, formed doubtless on a plan common in earlier times, the images of the gods stood on a platform in a shrine. In front of them was the altar, on which burnt the holy fire. Ou it, too, was laid the great ring, which, stained with the sacred blood, was placed in the hand of all such as were about to take any solemn oath. Hard by also was the brazen vessel, in which the blood of the slaughtered victims was caught, and the brush or twig wherewith the worshippers were sprinkled, while they stood behind a partition-wall opposite the platform of the gods, and from this outer court beheld the ceremonies. At He studied at the University of Paris, and relates some ih teresting stories of student life (0. He probably entered the order of St. Dominick at Lyons, where he became well acquainted with the Wal densian heresy. Like most of his order, he became a missionary, and preached the crusade against the Albigenses, as L. De la Marche says, probably at the time of the expedition of Louis VIII, in 1226. He was made an inquisitor by the Pope, and gives many curious anecdotes about his way of dealing with heretics. His long life, for he must have been nearly seventy at his death, was spent in the discharge of the busy duties of his office, which took him on frequent missions, some of which have left their traces in his work. One of the objects of the book, like those already mentioned, was to furnish preachers with mempla. These he does not giveseparately, and in alphabetical order, but incidentally in the course of a treatise on the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost (isaiah xi. 2, 3) Timer, Pietas, Scientia, Fortitude, Consilz'um, Intellectus, and Sapientz'a, whence the usual title Liber de Septem Donis.* Each of the seven parts is divided into emu, these again into chapters. Unfortunately, the learned author was overtaken by death in the midst of his fifth division (consilium). In the prologue he conscientiously cites his authorities, and an interesting list it is, giving an excellent idea of the state of learning at that day. The editor notices the comparatively few classic authors cited; on the other hand, Etienne de Bourbon was perfectly acquainted with the whole range of mediaeval theology, and borrowed freely from the temple contained in the sermons of Jacques de Vitry. The editor roughly divides the wmla in Etienne de Bourbon into two classes: First, those taken from previous writers, historical works, sacred or profane, theological compilations, lives of the saints, legends, poetry, fables, etc. Secondly, those borrowed from events contemporaneous with the author, from his own recollection or that of his friends, and from traditions communicated to him by word of mouth. We shall follow, in the main, these divisions and mention first those stories which have no historical value, but are of importance for comparative storiology, indica ting by means of his initials those which are borrowed from Jacques de Vitry.
