The Military-news Media Relationship

The Military-news Media Relationship PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Armed Forces and mass media
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Over the course of the next six months, the Strategic Studies Institute will examine the impact of the media's technological advances on strategic and operational level planning and policymaking, first in an overseas theater, and subsequently on decisions made at the national level. The first of these two studies recognizes the complexity of executing military operations under the scrutiny of a very responsive, high technology world news media. Given the volatile, unstable, and ambiguous environment in which armed forces can find themselves, the actions of field forces have a greater chance than ever before of affecting subsequent strategic decisions made at higher levels. The pressure on field commanders to "get it right the first time" is demonstrably greater than ever. The author intends that these thoughts provide commanders with an understanding of the high technology and competitive news media environment they can expect to experience and offers specific suggestions for successfully communicating with reporters.

The Impact of the Media on National Security Policy Decision Making

The Impact of the Media on National Security Policy Decision Making PDF Author: Douglas V. Johnson II
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428914862
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 34

Book Description
The author considers history and current research on the media, public opinion, and communications technology to provide both a view of the present and some suggestions for the future. He examines current claims that CNN-like mass appeal television broadcasting can dictate the march to war, and provides counter evidence that calls the direct connection of the media and policy decision making into question. The author seeks to identify the roles of the principal players and considers the effect of the growing capabilities of the public to be led by the media in national security policy issues. He raises additional questions that suggest considerable further research is required into this very important relationship. Media, First Amendment, National security, Public opinion, Media-public opinion interaction, Information age.

In Defense of Negativity

In Defense of Negativity PDF Author: John G. Geer
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226285006
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Americans tend to see negative campaign ads as just that: negative. Pundits, journalists, voters, and scholars frequently complain that such ads undermine elections and even democratic government itself. But John G. Geer here takes the opposite stance, arguing that when political candidates attack each other, raising doubts about each other’s views and qualifications, voters—and the democratic process—benefit. In Defense of Negativity, Geer’s study of negative advertising in presidential campaigns from 1960 to 2004, asserts that the proliferating attack ads are far more likely than positive ads to focus on salient political issues, rather than politicians’ personal characteristics. Accordingly, the ads enrich the democratic process, providing voters with relevant and substantial information before they head to the polls. An important and timely contribution to American political discourse, In Defense of Negativity concludes that if we want campaigns to grapple with relevant issues and address real problems, negative ads just might be the solution.

Department of Defense -- Retired Military Officers as Media Analysts

Department of Defense -- Retired Military Officers as Media Analysts PDF Author: Daniel I. Gordon
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437921647
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
This report provides an opinion on whether the DoD violated the appropriations prohibition on publicity or propaganda in its 2002 through 2008 outreach to retired military officers (RMO) who served as media analysts. The auditor concluded that the outreach program did not violate the publicity or propaganda prohibition. Although there is no doubt that DoD attempted to favorably influence public opinion with respect to DoD's war policies in Iraq and Afghanistan through RMOs with conf. calls, meetings, travel and access to senior DoD officials, the auditor found no evidence that DoD attempted to conceal its outreach from the public nor was there evidence that DoD contracted with or paid RMOs for positive commentary or analysis.
