Society and Health

Society and Health PDF Author: Benjamin C. Amick
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780195085068
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 402

Book Description
How do some families create more healthful environments for their children? How do we explain the health status differences between men and women, blacks and whites, and different communities or cultures? How is stress generated in the workplace? What accounts for the persistent social class differences in mortality rates? Why do societies experience higher rates of mortality after economic recession? Such fundamental questions about the social determinants of health are discussed in depth in this wide-ranging and authoritative book. Well-known contributors from North America and Europe assess the evidence for the diverse ways by which society influences health and provide conceptual frameworks for understanding these relationships. The book opens with a broad review of research on the social environment's contribution to health status and then addresses particular social factors: the family, the community, race, gender, class, the economy, the workplace and culture. The concluding two chapters examine the contribution of medicine to the improved health of Americans and recast the health care policy debate in a broad social policy context.

Social Medicine and Medical Sociology in the Twentieth Century

Social Medicine and Medical Sociology in the Twentieth Century PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004418539
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Little attention has been paid to the history of the influence of the social sciences upon medical thinking and practice in the twentieth century. The essays in this volume explore the consequences of the interaction between medicine and social science by evaluating its significance for the moral and aterial role of medicine in modern societies. Some of the essays examine the ideas of both clinicians and social scientists who believed that highly technologized medicine could be made more humanistic by understanding the social relations of health and illness. Other authors interrogate the critical assault which social science has made upon medicine as a system of knowledge, organisation and power. The volume discusses, therefore, the relationship between social-scientific knowledge both in and of medicine in the twentieth century. Collectively the essays illustrate that the respective power of biology and culture in determining human behaviour and social transition continues to be an unresolved paradox.

Book Description
The scope of medicine has expanded during the last few decades to include not only health problems of individuals, but those of communities as well. Health development is essential to socio-economic development as a whole. Social Medicine is mainly concerned with the health situation, with the measurement of population health, and with genetic, social, and environmental factors influencing human health, disease, and disability, health needs and demands, health care system and its components (structure and function), health policy (health programmes), evaluation of health systems and services, health legislation, health economy, health insurance, the relation between health and social care, informatics, and health management.
